Do you ship the sold item after you've transferred money to your bank account, but before it has cleared or do you wait the extra 3-4 business days til the funds have cleared your account? Just curious...from the buyers perspective, I get that they feel they've paid and want the item shipped ASAP, but from the sellers side, I guess the money might not clear and then you've sent the item and have no recourse.

So what do you do?

I would wait until the money has cleared, and i would expect people I buy from to do the same. I don't mind a delay in shipping and want both parties to feel at ease with the legitimacy of the transaction.

Thanks JG!

I ship as soon as the money shows up in my Paypal account and Paypal says okay to ship. I wasn't even aware that it might not clear the bank! How does that happen? I thought if it was in Paypal, it was good?

I'm not sure if having the money in your Paypal account is the same as having it in your bank account? That's kind of my question. Is it possible for the funds to be in your Paypal account and then not successfully transfer to your bank account ( I.e. not really be there)??

If you're using Paypal, I don't think that's the case - when Paypal receives the money, it's as good as if you have received it. The funds have certainly left the buyer's account at that point, and I don't know of any way they could recall them. I'm interested to see if anyone thinks otherwise - I had always considered my Paypal account as good as my bank account.

No, I do not believe that could happen.

Quick PSA - you can transfer only so much money from PayPal to your bank each month before incurring fees. Not a problem most of the time, just something to be aware if if you don't feel comfortable with it in there (though, to the best of my knowledge, scammers can't access it - the worst that can happen is that in a dispute with a buyer, PP can yank the money out without getting "permission" bit for all I know, they could do that with any linked accounts, too).

Hi,

I buy and sell on ebay. Paypal has a lot of functions. If the funds say they are there in paypal or have cleared you can mail the item, if however someone pays you via Paypal with a credit card you should get a message that it can take up to 3/5/7/10 working days for the funds to clear into your Paypal account.

NEVER mail anything until the funds have actually cleared into Paypal - so you can see them in there, if you want extra security set up a small bank account and transfer the funds as they clear from Paypal directly into that account. There are scammers out there who will pay you via credit card in Paypal and the cards can be stolen ones or have no money in them and the funds basically don't clear so you don't get paid but they will hassle you to mail the item usually saying that is urgent or its for a gift or some other reason. So you can in fact see a message that they have paid you on ebay but it is still waiting to clear in Paypal.....

Thanks everyone! I feel more secure now that I understand how Paypal works!

Ive sold one thing, and I waited until the money was in my paypal acct. It took me forever for them to finally allow the funds transferred into my account, and I didnt want this gal to wait.

I am waiting on a purchase right now i made on ebay ( UBER excited it could be a dud or it could be spectacular, im anxious to see which) and he wont ship until paypal clears it, which is annoying because i did it with a bank acct and its been like 4 days.

A payment in Paypal will say if it's cleared. If someone pays with a bank draft via PP, it will take 3-5 days to clear. I have had them not clear, so definitely wait to ship if it's a bank draft. It's pretty clear in PP when a payment hasn't cleared.

When i was selling my pear. I had 2 bite that were super suspicious.

One was someone who said they worked "off shore" and wanted to buy the ring for their daughter and they kept saying it was a gift for her and they were super insistent on paypal, but in a way that made it sound weird.

The second guy contacted me saying it was a gift for his dad, i knew that was a scam and asked "your dads gift is an engagement ring?" and they never got back to me.

Ditto.

I will add - as a buyer, I purchased an opal from a reputable vendor on an opal auction site - after my PayPal account indicated the transaction was complete, I kept waiting for the vendor to ship the item - I had to email him several times, but he finally admitted he wouldn't ship until the payment had transferred from his PayPal account into his bank account - he said this should take a couple more days. After waiting an additional 2-3 days (on top of a week), I contacted PayPal and opened a dispute. At that point, I had lost faith in the vendor - even if he was considered by the opal auction site to be reputable, I thought it unreasonable that he had received my payment in his PayPal account and still was not shipping my item - as far as I am concerned, vendors/sellers can transfer PayPal monies on their own time - once PayPal has confirmed a payment, the purchaser has completed his/her obligations and the vendor should promptly ship the item. (I did get the refund, as I knew I would, and the opal auction website is crossed off my list of acceptable vendors.)

I have bought and sold on ebay since 1999. The rules on there are always changing so it is important to familiarize yourself with them if you have not sold in a while.

When you sell on ebay, it is important to get the item to the buyer as soon as possible because unnecessary delays can damage your rating. Ebay is trying to be like Amazon where buyers expect 1 day shipping. I ship as soon as I get a message from paypal the funds have cleared. Do know that for new and occasional sellers, even though the money has cleared there is a waiting period before you can transfer it to your bank account. With items over $250, you must get online signature confirmation and upload it to ebay and paypal. If all goes smoothly, you will be allowed to transfer your money from payal to your bank 3 days after a successful delivery and no complaints from the buyer. Without it, some sellers have waited up to 3 weeks to get access to their money.

Do know that when you sell on ebay, even if you designate "no returns", the buyer has 45 days to return an item. And they can make up any reason they want and ebay usually agrees. If there is no money in your paypal account, they can take it from whatever account you linked it to.

If you are new to ebay, visit the help boards to try and protect yourself as scammers run rampid there.

^ to the point about no returns.

I bought my my girls bridesmaids dresses on ebay myself, and had them refund me the money (i added all the prices up and divided by three, sense they were all from different vendors) All had no return policy so it was a risky venture. One woman sold the dress as navy (which i was looking for) but it was clearly black, and didnt match any of my other dresses.

I emailed her to get my money back and she did not respond, filed a complained with ebay and gave her a bad review. After that she contacted me and gave me a refund but i was still out the cost of shipping

Ruby, I'm not selling anything on eBay, but I sold something on PreLoved and it made me wonder what was considered "safe" by most people...

Niel, ebay has a buyer protection feature which includes refund of shipping charges if the item was misrepresented.

Yenny, I buy on ebay and the seller usually ships right away- that day or the next. I always pay with paypal. Good luck with any sales!

Oops! Sorry! I saw ebay in your title and remembered my last transaction. Now I know there is a hell because my last buyer rules it.

When you guys ship doesn't the buyer get your physical address on the package? :knockout:

I did include eBay in the title, so I can totally see why you would think that. ;) I've thought about selling on eBay (mostly my daughter's "designer" clothes that get worn on special occasions and are in excellent condition), but the hassle has never seemed worth it. I'm sure I'd get more than I do taking them to a local children's consignment shop, but I'm a terrible photographer and I know that good photos are a must when selling anything....not to mention the packing stuff up, responding to questions, etc.

Hi Missy,

Ebay only returns the shipping one way. You have to pay for the return shipping. I just went thru this.

I have sold three times, and yes, they got my return address on the package. I suppose you could just not put a return address though. I only sold to reputable forum members that I "know" online though.

Yeah ... I've mostly only sold to people I know through here, but I think I *should* get a PO box, if only for peace of mind.

Thanks for the info Annette. I thought if an item was misrepresented they would refund everything including all shipping charges. Fortunately I have never had to return anything but I appreciate the correct info.
