Hi everyone!
I have been lurking on this forum for some time now and would like to say thank you, first for all the wonderful info and gorgeous pics, and second for helping me fall head-over-heels in love with the Daniel K rosebud ring.
I am currently looking at quotes for getting a custom ring based on this design for my engagement ring, and I have a few questions.
I am not sure whether I want to get the setting in white gold or platinum. I have received a quote for the platinum setting for between $5-6k, which means there would be about $4k left in the budget for the diamond.
I have not yet looked for a quote for a WG setting - can anyone recommend a jeweller for this?
I have looked on excel diamonds and found some 1ct asschers with good specs for around the $4k mark - although I am yet to received further info on these, so no idea if they will be good or not. I have heard some people mention that "bigger is better" in terms of being able to truly appreciate the asscher - if so, do you think it would be worthwhile getting a WG setting a spending the money we save on a bigger diamond?
Any help would be much appreciated!
thanks xx

My personal feeling on asschers is they need to be at least a 1.25-1.50 carat to really appreciate them. I had (for a very short time) a three quarter(ish) carat asscher. EVERYONE asked why my PRINCESS wasn''t sparkling!! I think that to really see the step cut from a distance it should be a bigger stone. I love asschers and will eventually own another when I can get a 2 carat!! (probably closer to the time when pigs fly!)

As far as white gold v. platinum. Everyone has there own opinion of it. I like white gold because it''s shinier and brighter. I don''t like the warmth of the platinum or the patina it gains over time. Platinum is definitely the stronger metal, but I haven''t had a problem with any of my white gold jewelry. I suggest that you actually try on platinum and white gold and see if one feels or looks better. Also, look at asschers up close and personal. See what size YOU like.

BTW- Welcome!!

I have emailed Pearlmans - but yet to receive a reply....although I had assumed a real DK would be out of the budget?
Do you have an idea of how much a DK with a 1ct asscher would be?
thanks

Personally, I wouldn''t trust anyone but Leon, Ocean or Maytal with that setting. That sucker needs to be be handmade. And it''s not the metal cost that''s driving that setting cost up... it''s the fact that, IF DONE PROPERLY, it needs to be done by hand. Goldsmithing and hand fabrication costs $$$. I would give Leon, Maytal and Ocean a chance to qoute it out for you.

4K isn''t a lot for an asscher though. 6 K would be MUCH better. Below 5.5 mm asschers lose their asscher-ness. And they need high color and high clarity as they show both inclusions and color very easily.

Thanks Gypsy - the quote I mentioned was from LM

Although we are coming to New York next year - it may be cheaper to get it direct from DK?

Wow. Okay. I think that's a little high for this:

Try Maytal or Ocean. There is not a lot of metal weight, and there isn't a ton of diamonds either (especially if you do 3/4 eternity which I would do) ... so I'd give someone else a call for sure.

And at the LM price... I'd contact Bill for the real thing too. Bill's prices are very good, and I know this because I've bothered him for a TON of pricing on various things.
