Hey All,
So who purchases by credit card and, who purchases by wire transfer?

Now hey...I had cash in the bank and I chose to pay with cc

. I used my credit card because I feel it''s always safer to buy online with a cc. That''s just me though...I like the protection of knowing that my cc company will always stand behind me. Also there are fees associated with wiring money so sometimes it''s only saving you a few bucks and not a few hundred. I guess it''s just what you are comfortable with.

Thanks for the replies. And thank you Smalls for pointing that out. With the wire transfer fee. I end up saving more putting it on my credit card. Of course that includes the fact that I earn points on my credit card as well. I think that''s a noteworthy point though.

Sorry, Small, I can see your reasoning! My wire charge was $6 and the savings was about $400 (I don't remember the exact amount). I also pay for things by CC if I have any doubts about the vendor. But I trust GoodOldGold 100% and wouldn't hesitate to pay them by wire.

I value that protection too. I would never make such an expensive purchase with cash, even from a respected vendor. I have a cash-back Amex, so I get 1 and 1/2 percent back on all purchases, which makes the wire discount less attractive.

Unfortunately vendors will only accept bank wire from overseas customers (unless it''s just a couple of hundred bucks or so), so I have had to pay by bank wire most times.

ditto that!
i would never buy something with a credit card that i couldn''t pay for with cash. that is just asking for trouble. especially a luxury item! i choose to pay with credit card to get the points and then pay the credit card in full to avoid the interest charges.

We also get points on ours (not cash back) but the savings on the wire purchase would be greater than the points value. I can certainly see that if someone gets cash back which equals the amount of the wire discount, then it''s a no brainer. We pay for everything else on one credit card and pay it all at the end of the month. I write very few checks.

Unfortunately one of the most prevelant scams against us vendors is CC purchases from overseas, particularly Singapore and Nigeria. At the very slim profit margins we are allowed it is simply not possible to take that much risk, especially if we do not already know the client.

Another popular Nigerian scam is to have an operator assisted call from a "deaf" person who has miraculously found us from all the vendors on the net from (drum roll) Nigeria and needing many thousands of dollars worth of gold chains sent "most quickly please, the wedding is next week."

Sometimes I think about my recording career, I will start with a song entitled "Mama, don''t let your children grow up to be Jewelers..." although it is hard to rhyme scam artists and scum buckets with any kind of artistry.

Because so many of them are abjectly poor and the government does not seem to enforce the laws and regulations concerning such activities. It is an epidemic of sorts, I have been receiving letters from Nigeria since long before the Internet, all appealing to my greed by offerring me millions if I only let them use my bank account to let them park their billions that they have stolen from their government in it for a few days.

I would feel worse for thier victims if they were not all trying to get money that is admitted to be stolen. Sheesh! More than one American has been killed in Nigeria trying to recover the money he paid in bribes to get the money that was never there out of the country. The government there makes token attempts to stop it, but from the three to five emails I get a week, I am guessing they are not very good at stopping it...

I paid by check. I had to wait 10 days to get the appraisal to release it but I didn''t mind. I wasn''t in a rush and couldn''t get to the bank for a while.

Yes I do understand that, and fully agree that vendors should do whatever they can to reduce the likelihood of getting ''scammed''. I have to say that the vendors I have dealt with are not opposed to taking CC payments after I''ve established a buying history with them, so there is room to move!

It''s just that with smaller purchases it''s not worth me doing a bank wire because it''ll cost almost $50 more.

Just a couple of wks ago I did a bank wire and had the wrong details on the transfer, and it bounced back twice, and the wire ended up costing me $150 in total

Is it cheaper to do local wire transfer within the US?

I bought from Wink and it wasn''t even an issue of trust. It''s just how I feel comfortable doing large purchases period. Aside from that I really dont have time with my two small children (2 and 1

) to go to the bank, get them out of the car, and hassle with them in the bank while I fill out the wire transfer form. It''s much easier for me to pay by cc then transfer the money out of my account to my cc via online bill pay when the statement arrives. That''s my comfort zone and my convenience level though. To each their own. I get points back on my credit card too so it''s to my benefit as well.
Wink is fabulous to deal with and very trustworthy...that was never a question and didn''t factor into my decision. It''s just the route we always go when buying larger ticket items

Generally yes. Usually 10 to 20 depending on your bank.
