Hi All,

I have my big 3-0 birthday coming up in a few weeks and I've been thinking about what kind of bling to get for a while now. I've always wanted a really blingy U-ternity band but they are just so darn pricey and I'd rather upgrade my asscher before I drop $15K + on a RHR.

So, here's what I'm thinking of doing and I'd love your input:

Purchase 5 stones from BGD with .30's (or so - maybe up to .35) and buy the BGD Classic U-prong setting. This will give me bling to wear for a few years (and I actually really like the 5 stone rings in general). Then over time, start buying single .30's (or have DH buy them -hey that would be easy shopping for him right?) lol  I love buying diamonds just like all of us on PS right so this could be a project that takes a few years to come together but I can enjoy collecting my stones over time and then evenutally have my dream U-terntiy made up of 17-18 .30'ish stones

The only real downside is that I'll have an unused platinum setting once I go to reset. But if I wear it for a few years, it will give me a lot of joy so I think it's a fair trade.

For those of you with 5 stone rings, are you still loving them? For a while there it seemed liked I was always seeing new ones posted on PS but recently not so much.

I stopped my my fav local jeweler Joe Escobar over the weekend and tried on a few awesome bands, I actually tired on a 7 stone w/ .23's that was gorgeous. In the past I've tried on a few Kwiat bands - AMAZING! that were in the .40 range and a bit big for everyday. That's why I'm thinking .30s are the way to go. I'm also checking around w/ some other online jewelers that have the U-ternity setting to see what their costs are for one complete ring but I just think that's going to be so pricey. And part of me really likes sourcing each diamond and having the attached AGS certs for all of them.

Looking forward to hearing your thoughts.

Thanks everyone!

I don't have a BGD 5 stone ring, but I do love my 5 stone ring! I wear it a lot as an alternate to my wedding set. The only thing I would caution you about with your idea is that while a 5 stone with .30's is a beautiful and blingy look, a full eternity with .30's is going to be a bulky ring. If you look at a thread like sna77's and see his wife's Tiffany eternity, it has around 15-18 pointers in the band with around 3 cts. total weight. I have tried on that band before and cannot image an eternity being comfortable larger than that. I know Owies Nana has a beautiful Memoire full eternity with 20 point stones, and since Memoire sets their stones low, I imagine it is quite comfortable. So all this is to say, I wouldn't consider collecting stones for a .30 eternity unless you go try some on. I personally would make the 5 stone band and leave it alone. Then for some other anniversary, get a smaller eternity. That way, you don't waste a platinum setting and you have two rings with different size diamonds!

Have you every contacted ID to see what they could for you within budget, just a thought :twirl:

An eternity with all .30's sounds like it will be pretty hefty. I've tried on some large eternity bands and I don't like the fact that you fingers cant close. I think Diamondseekers idea for two rings is a good idea, or how about a tapered eternity ring? Have .30's on the top tapering down to .1s or something underneath?

That sounds like a great idea!!! I love 5 stone rings! Happy 30th soon! :appl:

And I will add one more thing. If I were having a full eternity made, I would use a vendor I could trust to source the stones that were NOT individually certified. That will cost you an incredible amount extra in the long run! When you buy eternity rings, you generally do not get certs for every stone. I think AGS grading is more than $100, so if you multiply that by 18 or 20 stones, you are really adding a lot to your final cost.

DS - you've brought up some great points, thank you. I have tired on eternities in the .30 range and I actually find them comfortable. I have large knuckles so when the ring is all the way on my finger it spins and there's plenty of room for a larger eternity. I've always hated my large'ish knuckles but sometimes it comes in handy :) I don't really want 2 rings, I have a few other eternities that are smaller so I want this to be a large stand alone ring.

However, it is a good point about being certified, maybe I don't need that. And that does add a lot to the cost. Thank you so much for your advice!

Hi Farmer gal - I've thought about them but don't really love their settings as much. I might check in w/ them again though.

Thanks Chel, I've tried on some graduated eternities before but my rings spin and I think that would bug me. Thanks though :)

Thanks Skippy!!!

Agreed, I really think for anything below .20 carat is a waste of money for a cert. I have a few AGS 0 stones below .40 and I wonder how much I wasted on them being certed. I would rather just got for ideal cut but uncerted next time like my BGD bezel earrings. The lack of certs is what helped them price wise, they are still beautiful diamonds.

I plan on an asscher 5 stone one day and I'm not going to bother with certs. Good luck and I ditto contacting ID! I haven't used them yet since I haven't purchased anything in a long time but I plan on it!

Thanks Asscher halo, I'm going to work on getting some quotes using non-cert'ed as well. Thanks!

Me again :) I just saw another posting in SMTB and I saw one of IDJ's U prong rings. Okay, I'm really liking it :) I just emailed them and asked for a few quotes.

Can't wait to make a decision and get some new bling!
