My friend is having a birthday party for her one-year-old son tomorrow, and I''d like to get him a gift. Not having been around many babies lately, I don''t know what would be appreciated or appropriate for a child his age. I haven''t been able to get a hold of my friend to ask her what he might like, and I need to go shopping this evening.

What would you suggest I get him?

Target sells a line from "Parents" and I love their toys. the age range is on the boxes and you can find 12M and up. my daughter has the cutest pet hospital that is made by them, although I think that one is for 24m and up. Leapfrog toys are also great. My girls loved the fridge magnets.

I love toys from Melissa and Doug. Very well made and much nicer IMO than the modern plastic and electronic toys...

At that age, my son loved these bathtub instruments from Alex. They float. I think you can get them at Target.

Thanks so much for your suggestions, mrssalvo, neatfreak, and iluvcarats. I am headed to Target tomorrow morning (got too busy to go tonight), and I will take your recommendations into account. I am excited to see the baby eat his first birthday cake! It''s amazing how a year flies by.

I agree. Though I did buy Parent's remote control car thing for 12M for one of T's friend. I guess he loves it. Parents's also makes a good music set that ALL babies seem to love. Melissa & Doug have GREAT wooden puzzles. I also love Haba toys (not at Target though). Any walker/push toy is usually a hit.

I''m back with a report from the party, and my gift was a huge hit! I chose a talking cell phone from the Parents line at Target, and the little boy carried it around and pushed the buttons during the entire party. Other moms were asking me where I had gotten it! Thanks so much for that suggestion.

Tacori, he received a Radio Flyer push toy/wagon, and that was a huge hit too. It was really adorable when a little girl got in, and my friend''s son pushed her around the house. I can''t believe how fast those little ones can move!
