Home PS Mommy thread with toddlers 12-36 months

delurking here to gush over all the adorable baby pics!

sophia, hunter and daisy are just too cute for words

pandora, here in the US they asked us to start our son on TriViSol which is a liquid vitamin supplement - we've been giving it daily since he was about 6 mos old and the only reason our Ped said we should take it is to ensure that his Vitamin D levels don't fall too low. Apparently low vitamin D is becoming somewhat of an epidemic here, so she was being proactive.

chinacat - welcome to the thread! yes, my little one did get the chicken pox vaccine. i believe they gave it to him at his 12 mth appt.

dd - so cool to hear about the weight loss, congrats! how exciting that you guys are thinking about trying for baby # 2 in a few mos :)

sabine - glad you enjoyed your weekend away! i let my son dictate when he was ready to move to 1 nap from 2 - and he made the switch himself close to 15 mos or so. i hope the dr's appt goes well!

things are going well here - my 19 mth old has continued on with his word explosion and is now counting to 10. mama was one of his first words and the only one he used regularly for the longest time, but i'm sure my hubby knows how some of you moms feel - he didn't say dada until much much later!

oh, and i'm officially in the 3rd trimester! am thinking ahead to my baby (push) present and am having a hard time deciding between a solitaire pendant (likely 3 prong) or a blingy RHR. any suggestions? i received a tennis bracelet the first time around, so i'm leaning more towards the pendant, but would love to hear your thoughts.

Fiery, DD and Pandora
Your kiddos are so cute.

CC
Ditto everyone on weights. Meena actually lost weights from 9 months to 12 months when she was crawling and starting to cruise. She went from 90%tile to 40%tile. Pedi had us do weight checks, but didn't seem overly concerned. She started slowly gaining again after 12 months, and is 60%tile now.
I am kind of surprised that your and some of the other pedi are so concerned with speaking words. We asked ours at 15 months because Meena didn't say many words. He asked if she is saying 5 words, which she was, and he said she is fine and not to worry. At 18 months, he asked for 15 words, and 50 words at 24 months. Try not to worry.

Penelope
I read that comprehension is more important than saying actual words. And our pedi said that woof woof and various animal sounds are considered words because there is an association to an object.

LOVE all the pics. Soooo Adorable

fiery, discontinuing purees--that's a big milestone! I found that melons worked well for transitioning. They're just the right amount of sweet and not too sour. Soft and easy to eat.. watermelon is still A's fav food. Sorry to hear about your grandfather.

blen, quickly have baby #2....that'll solve the debate of when to have laser eye surgery ;))

mara, didn't have experience with it, but it makes sense that all the extra salivating would cause the gag/vomit. Hope it passes quickly!

sbde, yay for 3rd tri!!! I'm sorry I haven't been keeping up...do you know if you're having boy or girl? ETA, I vote for RHR....to celebrate the birth of A, I wanted something blue for boy so we went with blue topaz (my birthstone) and diamond (A's birthstone) half eternity band pictured in my avatar.

thanks qt, i've heard that comprehension is more important, too. what have J&M been up to?

A had a fever of 102 early this morning. It's gone down since then with some generic tylenol. Been drinking lots of water and has eaten some toast and steamed veggies so I think he's quickly bouncing back. Working on his 2nd nap of the day.

Hunter and Daisy are cute! It's nice to see pics around here again.

sbde, congrats on making 3rd trimester! Baby will be here before you know it.

fiery, we just stopped purees too, Kyle managed to get the last one I tried all over his highchair, his face, his hair, the walls, and almost on the ceiling! Self feeding is a food fight these days.

Pandora, Kyle got all the vitamins in formula, but we've started him on half a Flinstone vitamin along with whole milk that has D added. I believe in the US they have you do a vitamin supplment if they're EBF.

So Project Paci Removal was a big fail. I made it 1.5 weeks of paci with a hole, then gave up when he kept waking up at 4:45am. I gave him a "good" paci to see if that changed matters, and he slept until 6am today. I think we'll wait and try again after he turns 2. He only uses it in the crib, and spits it out when I get him in the morning, so I'm not worried. DH is very anti-paci and I was trying to humor him

I'll try a pic of Kyle "hanging 10" with daddy at the beach last month.

And my little man trying to grow up too fast, sporting a dirt 'stash.

Mgal, that first one is precious. love the stach hahaha!

Such cute pictures MG, Pandora, and Dreamer! Dreamer, I feel like I haven't seen pics of Hunter in forever, he is soooo cute!

MG, sorry the paci removal didn't go so well. Hang in there.

It's been a busy week around here. This week, Jackson dropped to one nap, we switched him almost entirely to whole milk (we're still doing bottles of 2 oz. formula, 4 oz milk, but dropped one bottle completely for a few more days), he learned to stand up on his own so he's been walking more, and his gums look like a swollen mess so I'm guessing some molars are close.

Along with this, his sleep has been quite disrupted, both overnight, early morning, and his nap. Yesterday he napped for 25 minutes total all day, today was 45 minutes (I let him cio, and he'd be quiet for a few minutes, whine a few minutes, etc. for almost an hour).

I'm frustrated because I feel like maybe the milk is bothering his stomach OR he wasn't quite ready to go to one nap, but it's really hard to tell because of the milestones and the teething. So I'm just trying to stick it out and hope it gets better.

I'm super excited that dh and I decided to go to New Orleans for the weekend. We've never been there before, so it should be a really fun trip. But now I'm more than slightly worried that Jacks is just going to be miserable. We're planning on taking away the bottle cold turkey and just doing sippies of milk, and with him not being well rested going into the trip, it might be a disaster. Keep your fingers crossed for us!

Anyone else doing anything fun this weekend?

hi mommies...i'm far too behind to try to catch up.

all the kiddos are too cute!! i love the pics.

it's been a busy past few weeks for us. DH was in vegas for his friend's bachelor party then the kids and i met him there, then we all went to disneyland for a few days then back to vegas for the wedding. being by myself with 2 kids at the airport and plane ride was ok...could have been a lot worse but could have been better. i almost wished B was in diapers. can you imagine me holding N who is trying to get down and explore the bathroom and at the same time helping B go potty...was NOT fun. but i guess DH felt bad enough cause when we got home he surprised me with a cartier love bracelet with alternating diamonds.

sabine, have a wonderful trip!!!

sbde, i vote a pendant but only because personally for me, i have way too many RHR and i never wear them but i wear my pendant everyday.

Pandora and MG-love the pics!!! They're adorable!

Pandora-We didn't pose her! She stands on her toes lol.

Sabine-have a wonderful time in New Orleans. Hopefully Jacks will catch up on his sleep and enjoy his time there so that you can enjoy your time too!

Puffy-what a lovely gift!

sbde-My preference would be a pendant as well.

My sister's little girl walked on her toes for ages, till she was at least 3 - I was suprised when Daisy didn't at all as I thought all kids do. Anyway, she still poses beautifully for the camera, she is just the sweetest little thing!

Sbde, thanks for the info on the vitamin drops - I have generic ones, but it's the extra vit D that I'm after so those sound hopeful... will have to see if I can get them here.

Sabine - have a great time in New Orleans. Hope Jacks behaves for you!

HELLLOOO

wow, it's been months. I haven't been able to log on since around Kate's birth and have been too busy to keep up with any threads, but i had some time to kill today so i wanted to pop in and say a hello

lots of new toddler mommies over here now--so great.

Life here is both crazy and good. Kate's birth, followed by my sister's wedding out of town (and all the hoopla that entails) + both my grandparents turing 90 (huge party) + still building our new house + lots of time out at the cottage = a jammed packed summer.
Kate's health is good, she nursed perfectly from day one and i've never pumped or given her a bottle so i am really tied to her right now...and will be for months and months i guess, but i was so relieved all her tests came back negative and her one kidney is working fine, that i don't mind being with her 24/7. She slept thru the night since day one (textbook definition 6-7 hrs) and is now doing a 8-10 hr stretch at night which is amazing. Helps to have a bit more energy than i expected. However i still feel zombie like on some days.

Co is great. He's only wearing diapers at night now. It was a loooooong potty training process, but once he decided he liked his underwear, we were good to go. He's had full daytime control for about 8 mos now--but not full will. where there's a will there's a way. Funny.
He's really hard to get down for naps now and skips them about 2-3 days a week. so annoying
oh and speaking of annoying he's discovered picking his nose...charming little habit. I posted FB vids with his singing and i think he's picking his nose in every one. This all started after having a bit of a cold a few weeks back . As long as he doesn't start picking his nose and eating it..... :? i'll gag

Pandora--gorgeousness ! love her

Fiery--she is a beauty!

sabine--Hello!

Puffy--sounds like afun trip--brave woman you are for taking the kids solo

sbde--i vote pendant too

MrsS, Lili, Tgal, tacori--hello girls, how are the kiddies? I feel like i know what you are up to via FB, but stories are always good

DD--oh my, hunter is so angelic looking!

Mustang--i wouldn't worry about getting rid of the paci--wait till after 2. We did with Co and it was easier when he could reason with us and we explained why he didn't need it. I think with Kate i'll wean early (she doesn't take them well so it won't be hard) but with the 2nd kid you realize that some things are better left 'as is' b/c eventually the child will outgrow the need for them pretty naturally.
It's like potty training. Either do it early when they don't try to exercise their free will, or wait until they are willing.

forgot to mention
Re: weight--i've been told during the 2nd year it's common for kids to not gain, gain very little, or even loose weight. They actually grow very very little around this time (compared to the first year). Co was 30 lbs and a bit of a shorty chubster at his 2nd b-day. Then he sprung up in height and now he is so lean his spine and ribs pop out. He eats less, but my Dr. assured me this is all very normal and the typical toddler seems to exist off air alone. So i am not too worried, but i was surprised to find he lost weight in the past 5 mos!! I wasn't expecting it.

Jas12--
That's great about K's clean bill of health.
I've been thinking about her.
And woohoo for Co being PTed.
J is still content in her pull-ups.
Like Co, she have full control of her bladder, but the decision to use the potty is just not there.
Hehe....I'll head on over to check out the clips.

DD--
Hunter is a dreamboat.
Love that mischievous look
Yay on TTC #2.

Pandora --
Daisy is a pretty thing.
Love her floral dress.
If I'm not mistaken, I don't think you and your hubby are blonde right?

China--
Ditto others about the weight gain.
J jumped down 2 curves during her 6th month checkup.
The Dr wasn't too concern when he took a look at mommy and daddy, though he did tell us to get her to eat more solids.
It took her one yr to gain 4 lbs -- I remember because we were waiting forever for her to break the 20lbs mark.
As for things to fatten her up -- butter, cheese, yogurt and avocado. oh, she was also drink about one bottle of pediasure a day.

PJ--
Hope Axel is feeling better.

MG--
Love the 'stache picture.

Both of us have dark hair - but were strawberry blonde like her as kids. She won't stay blonde though, she had my colour hair when she was born and has very dark eyelashes (lucky moo got DH's lashes which are like a cows  ). Her eyes are darker than anyone in my or DH's families - we both have hazel but hers are dark brown.

lili--have you gone with J to pick out underwear? This helped us a bit. But like J, Co was/is totally happy with diapers ( it's a battle to get his underwear on some mornings). Even today, it took his uncle mike's coaxing to get him changed in the morning so they could go out and play. I think they like the security and familiarity. I don't know if J is like Co in that sense, but Co has rituals and routines for every part of the day. So it was hard to get him to go from his pee-routine (pre-nap, pre-bath, pre-bed peeing), into a mind-space where he had to let go of control and accept that peeing couldn't be scheduled.
Oh and we did use some rewards at the start. I started with stickers but he didn't really respond to them so i then went to giving him 3 smarties for a few days. Some ppl are dead-set against this (to be honest, i was ,but i needed something to jump start everything b/c we were in potty limbo for 6 mos). Once he started going regularly he just forgot about the smarties -and i never offered them after the first few times. I don't like the idea of food rewards, but it worked, and i think he's forgotten about it and we are on to good'ol fashion praise (back to the intrinsic motivators! ;)) )

Moms with older kids, how long after you day-trained your kids, did they start staying dry in the night?

thanks for the info re the vomit ladies. the pedi thought he might have a stomach bug that was going around but said not to worry as long as his habits didn't change (eating, sleeping etc). the vomit appears to have all but stopped for now, from what i can tell he's back to spitup, so maybe it was a bug. kind of odd though as it was very intermittent and not much at all and again everything else seemed normal. anyway.

thanks lili! We had 1 rough night where he slept in bed with us, and now he's almost 100% better already. I got zero sleep that night of course since he is the biggest wiggle worm! Ended up in at least 10 different positions, upside down, kicking me in the ribs, at the bottom of the bed etc. How is J? Being her usual smarty self and testing you daily? ::)

Jas12- hi! so nice to see you and hear that Kate and the rest of the fam is doing so well!!

As for staying dry at night...I don't remember exactly how long it took (this was a couple of years ago) but I think for P it was a few months (maybe even 6) to stay dry through the night. I didn't encourage/push the night time training at all cause I was just glad she was fully trained during the day, so I put her in pull-ups at night and was content to do so til she turned 5 haha. But eventually she started waking up on her own in the middle of the night every night to use the bathroom and now can go most nights without using it at all.

Am I the only one figuring out a Halloween constume already? My mom and I spent all weekend sewing a saddle for the dog :rodent:

sbde RHR all the way because you can look at it!

MGal Hunter is a paci king, he only gets them when he sleeps and when he is in the car seat at the moment. Daycare weans them at naps when they enter he toddler room, which should be in the next couple of months for Hunter! But I think we will let him use them at night still for a while yet.

Hey ladies!

Hope everyone had a great holiday weekend :)

Don't know much about potty training except that it scares me more than taking her off of purees :p

So Sophia is not officially a walker but she's getting way better! Today she was leaning on the couch and walked across the room to me, then turned around and walked back! I think my 15 month estimate was right :)

fiery, yay! That sounds like a lot of walking~ she'll be running around you in circles in no time ::)

MG, hmmmm, I've been thinking about their halloween costume since 2009 haha. What is K going to be? Last year P wanted to be wonder woman and I thought that would be perfect so Axel could be Superman, but he wasn't walking (was only 6 months old) and didn't want to 'waste' that idea. I had her choose another costume (little mermaid) so we could save that duo for this year when he IS walking and not in a stroller the whole time. Hopefully I can find some used ones in the right sizes for a reasonable price. I am not crafty so can't make them. :nono:

Speaking of wonder woman, i forgot to say puffy, you're a champ for traveling with 2 young kids by yourself!

Had a low-key holiday. Had some family over, ate a bunch of good food, played cards....it rained a lot here (FLA). The cool weather cannot come fast enough!

DD - he hasn't used it at daycare for about a year, my lady is as anti-paci as my DH! But it does really help for the 4 hour car ride to visit family. We probably won't be doing that again until Thanksgiving anyway.

Fiery - she's getting better! Once they start walking there's no turning back. Kyle took a few steps at 11 months, then wouldn't even try until after his b-day.

PJ - my co-worker did a really cute duo when her #2 was little, princess and the peapod. Wonder Woman and Superman will be adorable! K is going to be a cowboy, with our poor dog (black lab) as his horse. I just picked up a cowboy costume on ebay for $10, and all the saddle parts were about $10 at the craft store. All I need now is one of those gentle lead leashes for the dog to be his halter and I think we're done. DH and I have boots, etc. so we'll dress up and be his posse.

hi all, love reading the updates--it had been awhile.

Jas12: things sound great--you are lucky to have such a text book newborn and cooperative toddler! C has discovered nose picking too. She goes to town then says "garbage" and puts it on the floor (sometimes it's nothing but she makes the motion).

Lili: C is skinny minny too. Gained so little since 18mo appointment, but eating non stop.

Mustang: love the photos and don't feel bad about paci fail--you're starting alot earlier than most of us slackers! (I still haven't weaned the bottle.. )

Penlope/Dreamer/Pandora: gorgeous photos!!

C is good, still attached to mommy and comprehending more and more. Now she says "mommy's home.. mommy was at work" when I come home. It's a sweet moment. She also says the funniest things sometimes. When she wants me to leave her alone (so she can do things I tell her not to do) she says "mommy go wash face". haha. She loves music and dancing, but god forbid if anyone else chimes in -- she'll point to whoever and say "no!". She also loves to chatter but lately has been making up words when she doesn't have the vocab to keep up. I usually can understand but I really think she's playing around sometimes. She invented one word and when I tried to find out what she was saying..she laughed and said it over and over as I asked "what does that mean?" Fun times.

I love all of the new pics that were posted! Hunter, Kyle, and Daisy are all so cute.

Jas - great to hear from you, and glad to hear that you seem to be adjusting pretty well.

Pandora - our pediatrician told us to try to get George in the sun without sunscreen for 15 minutes a day to help with vitamin D as well. He also gets some in his cow milk, and he takes a multi-vitamin. (Sidenote: I didn't think about moving him to Flintstones. He's still on the Poly-Si-Whatever drops. Good to know.)

Fiery - that's a lot of steps! It sounds like she's going to be running around in no time.

Sbde - As much as I've been trying to teach him not to, George loves to grab at necklaces and earrings and try to tug.... For me, I'd choose a RHR. But I don't know if you have that problem?

You girls are bad enablers. I am so wishy washy right now with Kiddo #2 though. There are days when I want another one so bad, and days when it seems terrifying. Daycare is so expensive, and kids take so much energy, and I don't feel like dealing with the sleep deprivation again, and I finally got my body back (kind of - I choose to ignore the whole belly pooch thing), and George is now at the point where he can play by himself sometimes which is so nice. And I don't have to moderate interactions and squabbling between two kids.

Oh, I think I've figured out part of the reason why my in-laws are more concerned with George's speech than I am: we have different definitions of what constitutes a word. As he consistently points at rocks and says "Gock", and repeats "Gock" whenever I say "rock", and will identify a rock as "Gock" when I ask him what it is, I consider that a word. My in-laws told me that Gock is not a word. I told them that substitute words count as words as far as speech development at this age is concerned, so hopefully they'll relax a little bit more.

Bwaaahahahhaa! This is HILARIOUS! Of course Gock is a word ! Don't they speak toddlerese?? 8)

Good lord, if a kid had to say it exacty right, then Hunter would have no words at all... but I totally count gock (rock), duh (duck), dodgy (doggie), pee (penis), mees (please), puh (up), Bah (ball), nana (banana), pappow (apple), mamus (Seamus, our dog), pane (plane), cah (car), biya (bike) and on and on to about 50 or so words in total. I think the only word he says just right is "book". I think the developmental psychologists count that way too ;)) . In fact, I know they do, because when Hunter was in a study they gave me a list to measure his vocabulary and the instructions specifically said that it did not matter if the word was pronounced differently than spelled, or than adults say, if they were consistent it was a word.

Jas, how old is Co now? And did you post Kate's birth story? did you have the natural birth you wanted? Glad to hear everything is going well!

Thanks everyone for the compliments on our little angel/devil :halo:  !

MG, Oh my gosh...cowboy with his trusty sidekick horse-dog?? That's going to be so cute. I hope you post pictures! I went on ebay yesterday just to see prices and found a brand new superman toddler costume for $3.13! For some reason nobody wanted to bid on this one...my guess is because it had a stock photo and not an actual pic of the costume. The seller had 100% positive feedback (2000+) and it was only costing $3.13 with $2 shipping so I had nothing to lose. Shipped today and will be here Sat or Mon. Score!

Janine, C sounds sooo cute. I love the "go wash face" hahaha. Sounds like she's doing great and at such a fun age.

Blen, silly in-laws! Gock is totally a word. :praise: Your reasons for not wanting to bite the bullet are completely reasonable. But those reasons will always be there....unless of course you wait til G is in Kindergarten, then you'll only have 1 in daycare fulltime. It's a life changing decision though so take your time!

DD, 50 words! Hunter is SuperToddler!!

Axel got into P's dress-up box this morning...came out with cinderella high heels on, a necklace and bracelet. That's one for the baby book!

Too true! I have all the same concerns Blen, but then PJ's advice rings in my ears every time.
