PS Mommy thread with toddlers 12-36 months

Great food suggestions everyone! Thanks so much!

Ella, no benefit to buying the ones in the pods. I just noticed in the beginning that Amelia was more transfixed and more willing to eat them. Now we actually just shell them and she picks them up. I like the flavor of the fresh ones at Trader Joe''s the best. It does have some salt, but that''s the least of my worries right now. I''m also impressed your kids like tofu out of the package. I love it, but it is bland plain!

I did the fresh beans with oil and salt the other day and Amelia hated them. I will try the frozen ones. You never know what get a kid to eat.

OK, I have to make a list of all this food to try. LOL, doesn''t it seem like the infant mommy thread is all woes about sleep and the toddler thread is all woes about eating? Ay yi yi.

snlee, D is talking more than Amelia, as far as words go. I think she''s actually trying to say things, but hell if I know what she''s talkin'' about. And edamame is fresh at trader joes in the veggie section.

Burk, doesn''t it freak you out to see your kid all svelte? It freaks me out especially when I see Amelia at the park next to all these happily plump kids! And then I think...would it be healthier if she was plump at this age? I don''t know. I see way more chubby kids at this stage so I am wondering if I''m doing something wrong. As much as Amelia doesn''t love veggies, we do get her to eat plenty throughout the day. It''s just healthy, lower cal foods so I''m worried. Tons of fruit, etc. Higher cal stuff is yogurt, turkey dogs, cheese. It''s all highly perplexing.

Tacori, hahaha...too funny on the stuck ducks!

Janine
I am planning to buy some clips on etsy, not actual giddy giddy clips. They have some cute animal ones for like 3-5 bucks, but I think some of them might be too big at 2" long. I haven''t decided yet.

You ladies are so good with meals for your toddlers. We don''t do anything especially for M. When we eat out, she eats the restaurant foods too. She actually loves curry with rice and any kinds of noodles and pasta. We probably also give her too much snacks, but at least she does like eating veggies and meats at mealtime.

Jen
Happy Birthday to Sophie and Marina. They are adorable.

Ella
Great to hear from you. Sound like Gabe and Kate are doing great.

snlee
D is saying more words than M. She mostly just says daddy/baba, mommy/mama, woawoa for doggie and more (when she wants something even if she hasn''t been given any yet). The rest are mostly babbling. There''s a few more words that she says but not regularly.

Tgal
I am thinking about making them, so we''ll see if I actually do them. But buying is much faster. LOL.

Tacori, stuck ducks! LOL! How cute! Will you post pics of the pumpkin farm trip?

TGal, thanks. I''ll check out TJs. I usually don''t go to the veggie section at TJs because I always get veggies at chinese markets.

Thanks everyone for all the great food suggestions! I''ve been wondering what to feed D since we ran out of baby food jars and I don''t plan on buying any more. I seem to always give him the same thing. Hearing about some of your picky eaters is scaring me! Right now D will eat anything! Once they reach a certain age, does the pickiness come out? I hope not.

Tacori
How funny that T was trying to free the ducks.
Seems like toddlers go through phases with eating. Our nephew used to eat everything when he was younger, but now he will only eat rice with broth... no meats of veggies. The other nephew only ate veggies in the beginning, then it was no meats/no veggies, and now he''ll eat meats prepared a certain way.

Yep, it freaks me out. Fruit and veggies are really the only thing Tayva eats consistently. I worry that she doesn''t get enough higher cal foods some times and if she should be chubbier....but I am trying to remind myself that her pedi isn''t concerned so I should try not to be. (easier said than done, though!) The thing is she used to eat well and was skinny then, too, so I''m worried she''s going to wilt away now!
40.gif
I think part of her problem is that she''s so darn independent and has such an attitude that she just picks and chooses when she''s going to agree to eat because she has started to turn down even some of her favorites like pizza some times!! I then get stuck with the decision of do I just let her not eat because she chose not to eat what I gave her or do I become a short order cook because I''m afraid she''ll weigh 26 lbs for the rest of her life at this pace?!?!? Ahhhhhh......

Tacori~That is so cute that Tessa was trying to free the animals!!

Snlee~Maybe D won''t do it, but yes, Tavva used to eat anything at D''s age and now is as picky as they come!!!

QT--
TGal is right. Definitely get the big girl ones as they are longer than the 1" infant ones.
The giddy giddy clips are snap clips though, not alligator.
J has snap clips and alligator clips.
Both clips hold about the same....but they really are not meant to hold huge locks of hair.
I think those baby clips are meant for more of taming the tiny wisps of baby hair that falls down on your eyes,
which may work well for M right now.
But once her hair gets thicker and longer, and if M is active, I suggest tying it w/ rubber band instead.
Keeps it in place the whole day.

Burk
T is probably just slim b/c you are.
I worry about M getting enough fat for brain developement since soy milk has less fat than whole milk. So I know what you mean about easier said than done on worrying.

QT~I think you''re right and a lot of it has to do with genetics. I''ve always been tall and slim so I am guessing T will probably be the same. Just so hard NOT to worry some times. I think M is fine with soy milk.

I think all kids go through phases of foods they will and won''t eat. It''s totally normal. My big girls went though stages where they wouldn''t eat a certain food and I just kept offering it and eventually they will eat it again. My kids use to love to dip many veggies in ketchup, gross I know but if a little ketchup helped them down broccoli or carrots so be it. Funny thing is, both seemed to outgrow it and now just eat the veggies raw or steamed, whichever way I make/serve them. Just hang in there and keep offering, they will come back around, I promise.

- Following lili's lead, I recently started doing Fage with honey. It's the latest hit around here. Lots of protein in fage.
- she used to like mashed avocado mixed with orzo pasta with a few squirts of lemon. She's over it now so I might try avocado with a bit of honey.

Yep, Fage, lots of protein and fat!
J almost finish the whole container in one sitting.

If you are not opposed to sugar, you can put a little sugar and mashed up the avocado and mix in some milk for an avocado smoothie.
J liked (note past-tense
40.gif
) it when the idea of avocado smoothie was a novelty.

That's funny A doesn't like rice.
J would eat it plain and scoop in mouthfuls.
She seems to gravitate towards carb -- noodles and buns are a hit w/ her.
She likes pasta too (but for some reason only likes it when we were sampling at TJ. I had to get 6 samples for her when we were there...but wouldn't have any of it when we bought it and prepare it at home.

lili, do you get the low fat ones, or the full fat? I will have to get the full fat ones...I got the other ones out of habit and because I wasn''t sure she would like it.

I hear avocado and honey is good too. She used to like avocados but now she''s not a huge fan. Tastes change, like mrss said!

Jas12--
Ah....sorry about m/s.
Hope it doesn''t last too long.
It probably hit you harder this time because you are not able to get the rest you needed w/ work and chasing after a mobile child.
Sorry to hear that Co is not as keen to veggie and healthy food.
I agree w/ MrsS and think that it is a phase.
Seems like most kids here are going or went through that phase.

I get the frozen edamame in the pods.
J seems to like it better and she seems to enjoy seeing the edamame pops out of the pods.

Tacori--
Haha, that''s so funny, J is the same way when it comes to eating.
She''s been picking out her food too. She''d walked over to the fridge, cupboard, or pantry and point to the items she wants.
Most time, it''ll be cookies, cheese (and she''ll pick between shredded, babybel, and mozzarella string), yogurt, applesauce, or pediasure.
I don''t mind too much that she picked the dairy products since those have protein and calcium in them.....but the applesauce and cookies are pretty much empty calories
8.gif

I do try to stock up on healthier (if there is such a term) junk food.

And like T, J goes absolutely crazy over her stage2 green beans and sweet potatoe w/ applesauce.
I usually mix in a small scoop of rice cereal or flax seed just to thicken it up a bit.

Too cute that T tried to free the ducks.
I have to laugh at T and the small pumpkin because J was attached to this small pumpkin (w/ a painted face and feather hair) that she picked up at the supermarket.
Normally, she''d be content just carrying it in the store and return things before we leave.
This time, she bawled when I put it down.....and she was crying for it
7.gif

I would buy for her, but hate to create a habit that everything she wants, she gets.

Glad to hear that you are starting to get into the groove w/ the GRE.
Just a few weeks more and it''ll be a thing of the past.

Snlee--
How cute.....sounds like D is talking alot.
I''m surprised he doesn''t use baba for daddy since he''s saying milk in chinese :)

Burk--
Haha, what''s wrong w/ my kid too.
J doesn''t like peanut butter either and isn''t eating much in the last couple of weeks.
She used to scarf down her food.
Funny thing is that she''s an excellent eater when we go out. she''ll eat just about anything we put on her plate.
The caretakers did say that most kids around this age go through that phase of not eating.....growth spurt, teething, etc.

TGal--
I got the full fat ones (the small serving one that comes w/ the honey).
I made the mistake of getting the lowfat ones and those taste nasty.
They used to have the full fat ones in a big container (which is alot cheaper than the individual serving ones),
but you'll have to get your own honey. I wonder if they stop stocking those.

Have you try steamed artichoke?
J loves those.
I probably should put some butter on it, but didn't want to get my hands greasy :P

lili, one of D''s favorite things to say is dadadadadadadada. There was a time when that''s all he would say! Where do you get the fage with honey? TJ''s?

Snlee--
How cute....daddy must be grinning from ear to ear when he did that.
Yep, TJ has the Fage and those nitrate free hotdogs that TGal mentioned.
We got alot of things for J there -- organic string cheese, shredded cheese combo (forgot the name) that J loves, freeze-dried mango and blueberries, hotdogs, Fage or the yogurt cups, gyozas, organic sweet corn that she likes to eat frozen, and some snacks like the veggie sticks and rice sesame balls (new item).

TGal--
Where is that gas station converted pumpkin patch located that MsFlutter went to last year?
Are you taking A to one?

Ooops...I probably shouldn''t have said that the lowfat ones tasted nasty, but rather that I didn''t like it.
I tasted the full-fat ones first and got used to the texture and taste of it, so the lowfat ones just didn''t taste right after that.
I was eating those like twice a day, until I see how much fat was it there :P

okay pumpkin patch pictures are up. I wonder if next year she will be more interested in the animals.

I was thinking about it but then a friend posted a pic of her petrified son next to a scary monster thingie.

I don''t remember the one that msf went to, but I know there is one near Del Amo on Prairie, and another on PCH I think...sorry I can''t be of more help. I generally am not a fan of halloween so I don''t look too much into this stuff.

Tgal-- i think you are right, i do believe there is some harm in *consistently*offering the ''bad'' stuff right when a kids habits are developing. I am fighting a losing battle for sure. Since i am surrounded with family all wanting to spend time with Co that translates into wanting to see him happy and italian families equate happiness with food. it is bizarre , but i think all this talk of eating habits has convinced me i have to come down hard on everyone. I am the mom afterall. bossy jas12 is about to come out.

i think you are very wise in limiting what amelia gets to try. It will eventually pay off. Obesity is obviously a problem for a huge number of kids and although chub is okay in the early years, you don''t want it hanging around much past the preschool years!

I wish i lived in a big city. We have such limited selection of healthy food choices around here & not much organic. We need a trader joes!

I do give Amelia special snacks, but not consistently. Special snacks are wheat goldfish, and the like. I''m not opposed to animal cookies, but it''s been ages since I''ve given her somemthing like that. You''re right in that probably one or two times won''t kill a kid, nor start any bad habits, and that like anything else, consistency is key.

I''m already seeing older toddlers that are looking a little too pudgy considering how active they are. And while genetics come into play, I know for a fact those pudgy toddlers get to eat a lot of junk food.

Our house is definitely not the "fun house" though, hehehe. I do not let Amelia climb, stand or jump on furniture. Not because I think it''s some great sin, but I have friends without kids who probably wouldn''t appreciate kids jumping all over their couch, and I believe training for that kind of stuff starts at home. Plus I also don''t like seeing kids jumping over couches in public places. So I ask my friends when they come over to not have their kids do it at my house because Amelia obviously sees that. Well, one of the kids loves jumping all over furniture so she spends a good chunk of her time keeping him off, which is no fun for her and I do feel bad. I''m sure she also thinks that I''m no fun because I would rather turn on music for the kids than TV (her son was totally whining for me to turn on the TV), but it is what it is and I don''t apologize for the way I run my house. There are a TON of things for kids to do at this age: play with toys, dirt, random (safe) things around the house. As you said Jas, obesity IS a problem in this country and TV and junk food are the two major culprits of that. So I wonder why so parents have no issue with giving their kids that stuff so early. But not my problem, I guess!

Actually, kind of funny, the mom of the kid mentioned above was over yesterday and I turned on the TV to a music channel. Her son paused and then got upset and she said, "He''s thinking, is this a joke?" I didn''t say much in response. Then he was hungry, so I said I do have snacks and listed them off: string cheese, yogurt, dried cranberries, dried blueberries, bananas, strawberries, kiwis, pineapple, edamame. She didnt'' say anything to that. Then I said, "I have an old bag of goldfish that''s been here for awhile?" And she said, "Oh yeah, that will work...he likes that kind of stuff." Well, of course he does. So does Amelia. But I try the other options first!

Just got back from OB appt, and we are having a baby boy. Dr. said 90% b/c he wants to give himself a chance of error, but also said it''s pretty obviously. I saw the turtle this time, so I believe him.

Please don''t mention this on FB since DH and everyone IRL will be surprised. But I got his permission to tell you ladies.

Oh QT, how PERFECT! Congrats woman!!!

Oh and I forgot M's 15 months stats.

Weight: 21.0 lbs
Height: 31.25 in

She got two shots plus her first flu shot today. She was brawling. She is sleeping now.

ETA: Thanks snlee, MrsS and Tgal.

Re: Food. Feeding James is hit and miss too. Some days he''ll eat anything you put in front of him and other days he will hardly eat anything. We offer him a lot of different foods to try too. Some things that he likes:

- bananas
- watermelon
- apples or applesauce
- green beans
- peas
- sweet potatoes
- potatoes
- spaghetti
- mac n cheese
- yogurt
- cottage cheese, colby cheese, american cheese
- cooked chicken, pork or beef. cooked so much it''s falling off the bone

We also feed him whatever we are having but the things I listed above are things that he will usually eat on any given day if he''s being picky. He''s got a molar coming in and I think that''s part of his deal.

We are moving into our house one week from tomorrow! I am really excited and can''t wait! When we get settled in I''ll have to post some pics for you to see.

qt, so happy for you! Now you''ll have one of each and I''m sure your little man will be as adorable as your princess!! Congratulations!!!
