PS history and trends: i.e., "I want one too!"

I remember a huge tri-color-rolling ring surge a few years back. Someone, somewhere had to kick off this "stacker" madness. (Despite it flattering very few, myself included! )

Martini settings for studs were also HUGE - until someone realized they were stretching out their holes and then WHAM, back to basics.

The number of stones RESET around here in all forms just staggers! :o I really never knew folks could be as fickle before! I guess that when it comes to purses and shoes & stuff - when you get sick of them you throw them out (and how often are you really watching your friends clean out their closets anyway) ... but jewelry is such a financial commitment that it makes sense to *restyle* rather than sell & lose a ton of money in the process. The urge to "restyle" just seems to come so FREQUENTLY though!

I've noticed a lot of HUGE beautiful older cut diamonds in lower colors!

Remember the Sharper Image U/S trend? I am surprise we didn't save the company ;))

I didn't show up here until after I had my e-ring chosen and under construction. So, I wasn't influenced here by trends. Although, I chose a solitaire that was "enhanced" with diamonds around the center stone, so I guess I was on the front wave of the halo trend without knowing it at the time.

I do blame PS for my intense interest in shared prong eternity bands, a la my Memoire band. She sure is purty! Thanks!

LOL, yes! And mine is STILL going strong! I bought it in 2006...

I have martini prong earrings, the one trend I was all for! I think I bought them in 2007 and still wear them nearly everyday.

Other trends I noticed are - halos, cushions, rolling rings, diamond jackets, 3 stone rings, rose gold, and lately OECs.

I will also say that antique, vintage finds on ebay are also a trend. There are people who have been ebaying forever (ForteKitty comes to mind) but for many PSers, I would say the trend has happened in the last 12-18 months.

PSers who have been here have spent their money already on premium cuts (like ACA's, etc) and don't seem interested in doing it further (also MRB's don't seem to hold interest for veteran PSers anymore), so many are out to get new gems at less than retail prices.

I really this trend, because from a picture/eye candy perspective, it keeps things interesting around here. It's treasure hunting vs retail buying.

Yeah, I must say...I adore the treasure hunting mavens on PS. Although I am envious of their ability to find and win these items, I love living vicariously through them.

Edit: Whoops, meant to edit my post prior, not quote myself!

ETA, guess it's too late to edit, but I meant I "really LIKE this trend."

Andelain, your studs pics definitely helped to inspire me to go with the 8-prong settings. And after mine were made, they were posted as stock settings on the BGD site! You must be my studs soulmate - same settings, both H&A, same color, same clarity, just about the same size, and we inspire vendors to make them stock settings

:appl: :appl: :appl: :appl: :appl: :appl: :appl:

I remember when you got yours, I called you my earring twin sister. :appl: :wavey:

There was also someone else, I've forgotten who, that got a pair that was the same as ours. She got hers right after I got my set. Wish I could remember who, we're earring triplets.

So true. Though the self-back-patting/SUPERIOR SKILLZ claims can get a bit rich :naughty: . I also love to find out about unique artisans like James Meyers etc ... or who is doing the finest pave (even though I do not & will not probably ever need this knowledge!)

I predict Mike R will be the next "it" designer for PSers . . .

I think Mike is just outstanding, but I don't think he'll see the quantity of PS business that Victor does simply because of his location. Having to send a diamond to NZ and worry about whether your insurance covers that as well as whether there is any duty for doing so is pretty daunting. But I guess we'll be hearing reports about that! I saw a preview for "The Hobbit" today and my honest first thought was...I need to take a trip to NZ and buy my souvenir at RGD!!!

Definitely lots of trends here, but I notice that most of the items listed are pretty classic pieces, which is good since they won't likely go out of style.

I've been buying jewelry on ebay since 2003! ;)) Can't claim superior skills, though, just dumb luck and a lot of spare time.

Yup, I purchased one sometime between 2006 and 2007 and mine still works great as well!

SNORT. Yeah here's hoping that trend doesn't catch on!

I'd add Tiffany replicas which first were from Excel but now the popular one is the Vatche U-113.

I was just trying to think of the items I have that would be considered included in the trends and that would be:

WF diamond huggie hoops, Memoire band, Leon and Vatche solitaire settings, Sharper Image ultrasonic, DBY necklace, vintage 5 stone ring, bought an antique ring on ebay and sold it on pre-loved, BG bezel pendant which I plan to reset, and that's all I can think of. I have bought many other things including designer jewelry on ebay and locally, but none of those are PS trend items. Most of my jewelry is very classic, though.

Deco, c'mon! PS is the best place for ego stroking! In all ways, shapes and forms.

As Alj mentioned, one of the first trends almost 10 years ago was the eternity e-ring/w-ring set.

There's been so many. Stacking bands. Earring jackets. H&A (also ES was a hot ticket for a while, the precision of the cut without the brand markup). HCA sweet spots. Diamond halos. Cushions. Asschers. Earring jackets revisited (IDJ).

Trends with designers and going custom. Quest. Leon. I don't see Mike R becoming a hot trend, he's expensive and as mentioned he can only do so much, plus his pieces are really more for the unique, work-of-art seekers rather than mainstreamers.

The obvious most recent one is old cuts, especially ones found for deals. The irony is that I wanted an OEC for my e-ring but when I came here and learned about how precise and fantastic the newer cuts could be, I admit it! My head was turned! So I just consider my re-kindled love of the later cuts a re-discovery of awesome. But I do think about all the awesome OEC's I could have had for probably pennies over the years before PS'ers realized they were ridiculously fantastic lol.

Outside of jewelry. As Tacori mentioned, the ultrasonic, omg, how many of us bought? 40? 50? Mine is long gone. Charlotte pants. Balenciaga bags. Crockpots. PS has often been a great testbed for things and PS'ers love to share their great finds with other PS'ers.

Clairsonics. Are those of you who bought them still using them?

Same here! 2006 and mine's still going strong!

There was also the WF scattered band trend for awhile. The bezel sapphire and diamond trend. The 'Danielle' bezel band trend was hot for a few months, too!

And, and the Vatche x-prong trend! When I first joined in 2005, the x-prong felt like the setting to get since it so closely (exactly?) mirrored the Tiffany Lucida!

Who made those big keys everyone was buying? Those were definitely trendy for a while.

the hunt for a Lucida replica is what brought me here!

LOLz. Skillz. It's not rocket science. It's time...and lots of it. I'm all for not taking the adorning arts so seriously. It's fun, folks!!

Upgrading...the endless quest for the honker. I have never known folks irl (including when I worked in the trade) to upgrade with such frequency...and yeah, I'm guilty!

Multiple E-ring/wedding sets. PS is a rare bunch. (and yeah, you can include me in this category) Most folks have only one treasured wedding set. Raise your hand if you have multiples!

PS is often the only place for jewelry ego stroking. Especially when real-life pals don't give hoot about your jewels! But, I suppose some folks are sensitive to the stroke regardless. :cheeky:

Diva Cup. Perhaps the strangest, yet still awesome trend.
