Protecting against breakage/damage?

Hi Everyone,
If I were to buy a diamond online and then go to a brick-and-mortar place to have it put into a mounting, how do I go about protecting my ring and getting it serviced for life? I have found that most online diamond stores don''t offer lifetime replacement for damages and would a physical store actually cover for these kinds of things? Or, is this where an insurance policy would kick in?
