So I''m not sure what setting to go for. I''ve talked to a friend and her mother and have not been able to get any info that''s too specific. They don''t want to be too obvious so they were not able to pry too much.

So I''m torn between picking a setting that I think is nice, but that she may not love and getting a basic white gold "tiffany style" six prong and then letting her pick out the setting. I suppose it''s possible that she would like this setting and keep it but I did gather that she doesn''t want a completely basic setting. I''m trying to keep this a secret so I don''t want to pry to much.

What do you all think about proposing with a setting that will be changed. Would that be lame? I''d appreciate any input!

This is totally acceptable to propose with a temporary setting.

In this day and age I think a girl would really appreciate having input, so no, it''s not "lame". The engagement itself will still be a great surprise and then I''m sure she''ll have a blast picking out a setting.

I would go with an inexpensive Tiffany setting so she can pick it out later. How sweet and considerate, so not lame

That''s a really great idea! I think a total surprise proposal is very romantic.

Lame?? No it's perfect. Put the diamond in a temporary setting and let her choose the setting of her dreams. You guys can have fun doing this as a couple once you are engaged. It's very thoughtful of you, and she'll be thankful you allowed her to have imput into something she'll be wearing for many years to come. I think it's very romantic!!!

Definitely perfect! I''m sure she''ll appreciate having input in the setting, and it''ll be a fun project for you guys to do together, in picking out the new setting

Getting a simple temporary setting is the exact right thing to do! I picked out my setting, and am soooo glad I was given that choice. Ring shopping is a blast, and I''m sure she will appreciate you not robbing her of the experience. And like others have said, the proposal and the beautiful stone you pick will be the best surprise ever! Heck, she just might love the simple temp. setting!

Hi! I think most girls would appreciate that! My fiance picked out my lovely oval stone and proposed with it in a thin traditional solitaire setting. I have always liked a slightly wider cathedral setting so a few weeks later we had it reset. Almost a year later we picked out my wedding band together and it''s exactly what I wanted.

Good luck and congratulations!

Thanks for all of the encouraging responses. I was worried that she would think I was too lazy to do the homework but like you all said I just want to make sure I get what she really wants. Plus, I think she''d enjoy shopping for it (although I do know she wouldn''t want to shop for it before getting engaged.)

Here is a link to a thread where I asked about the diamond I''m looking at. I think it has a great glow in person.

BTW should I be worried about resetting a diamond? Anyone know if it''s likely that the diamond would crack?

Thanks again!

Couldn''t have said it better myself!

I would say yes, go for the temporary setting, as she is going to want to put that ring on her finger the minute you propose, so I am not a fan of just using the stone in the proposal. You an then have the best of both worlds, but going shopping for a permanent setting together.

Not lame at all! Definitely the right move. DH did the same thing to me and I ended up keeping the 6 prong for 3 years because I couldn''t find anything I liked better, LOL.

How sweet of you to realize that she''d probably like some input into the setting.

I think it''s a great idea. She is going to have so much fun shopping for the setting.

Thanks for all of the replies. You''ve all been very helpful. You''ve convinced me :).

I''ll get the tiffany style setting and then shop around with her for the setting she likes most.
