Hello Diamonder....
I''m a new comer here, had been reading a while now :). I have a question, I''m thinking to buy a diamond for my gf. The price rang is about 30k. Can I have some input from you guys? (I dont know what all the girls like, size or quality?)

Thanks everyone

That's a large can of worms to be opening up...the only person that can answer that is YOUR girl. Have you spoken with her about it? If not, and you can, I highly suggest you do that...or at least talk with her best friend.

Because i dont want her to know that I am planning to buy her a ring (btw, I dont talk to her friends :S).

Well you really need to here. We can all tell you what WE want until we are blue in the face, but all that matters is what your girl wants. Which can vary wildly from woman to woman...

She doesn't have ONE friend you talk to or CAN talk to about something like this? Or what about proposing with a placeholder ring and then letting HER in on the process of choosing it?

What about her mother or sisters?

I''ll answer his generalized question. LOL

I am a perfectionist and therefore would rather have quality over size. I am very color sensitive and also have ''mind clean'' needs as well which is why I ended up with a 1.01ct E VS1. Be aware however that many girls are just the opposite of me. They want the biggest rock money can buy on their finger.

Like Neatfreak said, twenty women could post and you''re likely to get twenty different answers and explanations of why they each like what they like. So I guess if you''re looking to find some sort of "average response" then this is a good approach.

As far as what type of setting to get? If you have no idea whatsoever and you don''t feel like fishing for clues, I would pick out a simple solitaire setting to propose with and let her pick out her own setting later.

Good luck!

Something like this...

I agree with the others...every girl is different. But if you must get something and you have no outlet for imput then I''d go with a classic Tiffany style solitare and get the best cut you can for your $$. Usually at this stage of the game though, you should have some idea as to what she likes in style. does she wear silver mostly or gold? that can help in deciding the metal of the setting. Does she wear "blingy jewelry" or is she more simple. That may give you an idea of the size of stone she''d be comfortable wearing.
Anyway, pay attention to the little things and go from there. Just be prepared to make some adjustments if the ring is not what she likes.

Hello all,

Thank you for all your answers... I really don''t know what girls like :S. Oh, yeah, I spoke to one of her friends, and she said she like quality... any help on that?

Maybe you can tell us a little bit about your girlfriend. Is she into brand names or would she appreciate a better quality and size for the money? Does she like classic designs or something really modern? Does she like delicate designs?

If you have no idea at all, a Tiffany Novo, Harry Winston or Cartier ring is always safe :)

For 30k you can get a great balance of quality and size, you have an excellent budget! I would give whiteflash.com a call and have the personally suggest some stones for you. Their ACA line is stunning and cut extremely well to sparkle incredibly. Then I would give leon mege a call (artofplatinum.com) because an incredible platinum setting designer.

Hello all,
thanks for your answer.... :) She is very simple girl, smart, cute, she doesn''t want anything expensive, but again, she''s love of my life, and i can afford that. She does like simple things. I took her to the jewelry once, year ago, and I asked her what she likes, she pointed at an 0.6 karat, for me, it''s pretty small, and beside, I heard that girls like big diamond, because they compare to each other? is it true?

and again, thanks :)

P.S: im planning to propose to her soon :D:D:D

Go big, if you can. Girl''s like it big (or at least this one does. LOL). That''s said, I''d get the biggest, best quality cut for your money. Decide how much you want to spend on the stone and how much you want to spend on the setting and see if you can narrow down the shape first.

oh, other question, color or clarity or cut ? which is more important?

Another can of worms. LOL.

Me, I think cut is first and I think most PS would agree, but it is a personal choice.

Not all girls like big diamonds. Many of us do, but each girl is different. And some girls want to know that their diamond is better in terms if quality, not necessarily bigger. You''ve got quite a budget to work with, so you can get her something really outstanding. The question is, outsatnding in what ways? You could get around a carat of EXTREME quality (as in like D IF), or you could get over two carats with great quality that looks just as good to the naked eye. If she picked out a 0.6 carat, maybe she would appreciate the former. Of course, she could have been "trying to be nice" and not showing you what she really wants because a lot of us girls feel guilty asking for something really big or expensive. So it''s really just too hard to say without knowing her. One thing for SURE though, get the very best cut quality you can find, because that is what makes a diamond sparkle. Even a 3ct D IF diamond won''t sparkle if it''s cut poorly. AGS 0 graded diamonds are guaranteed great cuts!

Yep, that''s my recommendation too. Lucky her! I would love to have a Leon Mege setting one day!

so I should get a Premium cut Diamond, top color, top clarity... ?around 1 karat?

If you want to propose soon and don''t really have a clue about things (seems like you are kind of flustered by all the different variables), and have a nice budget, the best thing for you to do may be to walk into Tiffany or Cartier and buy her the largest, classic solitaire you can get there. You would get a beautiful ring immediately without having to stress about all these details.

I wouldn''t go for TOP color/clarity. I would recommend that you have somebody like Whiteflash or goodoldgold pick you out the biggest, best cut diamond that is around an F/VS1 any higher than that and your paying for things you definitely can''t see without optics.(even at F/VS1 your paying for things most people can''t see)

You can trust the people at both of these companies, they actually want to help, not just sell the most expensive thing they can.

For 30K it''ll be a big beauty, from either one of those places. Keep us updated.

hi :)
what do you think about this one?

ABC- Welcome!!

Honestly, somehow (whether you talk to her/family/friends/etc) you have to try to find out what she likes (at least what she prefers shape-wise when it comes to a diamond). Its just too much money to spend to not have at least some kind of direction, you know? Once you come back with some preferences of what she likes, we can totally help you so much more.

Good luck, and keep us updated!!!

Stunning stone!!!! Wowee!!

I would however ask WF if they have anything similar, but lower the clarity to VS1 or VS2 to save some dollars or go a smidge bigger.

But, if you are happy with VVS clarity (a bit of overkill for some of us) then you have picked a stunner!

She is going to fall over when she looks at that beauty - don''t forget pictures!!!!

Hello all,
I had a chance to talk with her close friend today. She told me that a round diamond aroudn 1 karat should be fine, don''t get too big... she doesn''t like big... so any suggestions? (btw, I sent her the link of the diamond i choose, she said it''s WAY to big).

how about this one?
