Hello all -
Now that I have decided on a 5 stone ring, I face the problem of picking side stones...the question is this - what size for the first set and the second set? - I have a 2ct round center - I was thinking 5.2mm's and 3.2mm's - will they be too small? too big?...what about 6.0 and 3.0? I am tall and have long fingers and my last ring (which this one is replacing) was a 1.18 center marq w/ 2-40pts and 2-24pts. I just loved that "all stones" look and I could handle the size/width with a ring size of 6. Suggestions?

The question is...can a size 6 finger handle almost 25mms of stone, right? I'm assumming that a 2 carat diamond is about 8 mms.

I'm in the process of having a 3 stone ring made and I was told that the proportion often recommended for a 3 stone is 2:1. This is weight, though, not diameter. So it was recommended that I go for side stones totalling about 1.35c which is what the center stone is. I ended up with side stones that total 1.52c and the diameter of the 3 stones will total 18mms. I'm worried about that being too much for my finger which is a size 5 1/4. (I'll know more when I get my ring which should be soon.)

Don't know if this helps, but I have also wondered about just how much a finger can handle.

Thanks for the info - please let me know how it looks/fits when you get it. Good guess on the center

- it's 8.22 x 8.20. I was thinking the weight too - but someone suggested diameter is the issue - not weight. guess because a .50 can range like from 5.00mm - 5.12mm - or something... I don't want it to look to gaudy (if there is such a thing

) or too skimpy...If a 3 stone has those proportions, I wonder what a five would be? - maybe 1/3 of center and 1/3 of that for the next set? - so like 60pts and 20pts?...ugh - decisions .... decisions...

icelovr, I don't worry about it looking too gaudy as much as I worry about it all fitting on your finger! I wish I could help more with what the most "pleasing" proportions are...There was a thread here a while back that showed various proportions for 3 stone rings but I haven't seen one for 5 stones.

My ring is supposed to be finished this week. I'll post LOTS of pictures when I get it!

Just throwing in my 0.2...

There must be a total width of the aligned stones that would just cover the top of the ring without making it unconfortable. This is usually the diameter of the ring or a little (say 2mm) less. I woudl cerainly keep the proportion between neighbor stones constant, and start at a 2/3 ratio: this means the first pair of sides could be 6mm and the next 4mm. However, the resulting line-up would be 28mm long, so the stones could not posibly be lined up without some gimmick to make them fit. These are things that the maker of the setting can and should address before you buy the side stones. Actually, most jewelers could provide some choices of sides for you. And if things get desperate you could alwasy buy a handful of CZs and play around with for size reference. I would find a visit to a jeweler more practical though...

You bring up a very good point - 28mm will probably be a bit much across the top huh? I saw a Vatche, a Martin Flyer and an A. Jaffe. The Vatche is the winner so far, it's graduated and I think can handle the spread, the side stones on the Flyer looked rediculously small - I think they were 2-.25 and 2-.15 - w/ a 2ct center it looked like I spent all my $ on the center and couldn't afford sides. The Jaffe looks beautiful - but I fear it's one of those rings you take pictures of and can't wear. Take a look - what do you guys think?
