How many of you guys can honestly say that every prong on your setting sits perfectly?

When you're dealing with PS'ers everything has to be ideal but when it comes to setting the stone - how often is it really an ideal match (meaning the prong is sitting right on the crown).

Look at this setting... is this okay? Would it cause any problems?

I'll try to upload more pics.

I just looked at my ring, and all the prongs are sitting on the diamond nice and tight. I would say that yes, that one could cause a problem of getting caught on something.

I have bad eyes, but if one of your prongs doesn''t sit on the crown, you run the risk of it getting caught on something and having the prong bent out of shape, which in turn may put your diamond at risk. If it really bothers you, take it back to your jewelers to have it fixed; it shouldn''t be that difficult for them to do so.

My old ring used to have a prong that didn''t sit right on the crown, and lint was forever getting caught in the prong. Drove me nuts. I have no problem with the new setting now, so it may be a case of how detail-oriented the jeweler who set the ring is. Good luck and please post more pics if you have them.

Definitely get that prong tightened! It looks like your diamond isn''t touching it at all from your photo. At least you have a 6 prong ring, but if another prong were to get so loose, I''m not sure how safe your diamond would be...

I''ll post more pics.

I just got the ring back from being set, so it''s brand new.

The funny thing is the place I bought the setting from is a popular place in my area and are very well known. I''m suprised after having years fo experience that the guy would let this go out the door.

Can somebody please post pictures of what a prong setting should look like?

I want to take it back to the store and show them.

I just got off the phone with them and they said to bring it in and they will look at it.

I will try to post more pictures tonight but it looks like none of the 6 prongs totally sits perfectly on the crown of the diamond.

Also, should the pavilion be touching the prong or should there be space?

Update -

took the ring back to the store and she said everything was find with the prongs. She rubbed it against her shirt and it didn''t catch. She shook it near her ear and didn''t hear it moving.

See my pic I took above...

She said she could have the setter look at it but it might take a week to get back.

She also said that it looks pulled off of the diamond but that part of the prong is not polished and looks like there''s a space.

I dunno... this place has been a problem from the start and doesn''t understand how to service the people at PS. The diamond came from JamesAllen.com, the setting a store around my area.

I''ll end up buying the wedding bands from a vendor online.

I think there something to be said about who you should get to check and adjust prongs.

My preference for PSers would be diamond setters. I get diamonds set for consumers all the time. I have the benefit of getting that done by a Diamond SETTER. That is all he does. He makes sure the job is a perfect as it can be, and because he isn''t a jewelry "jack of all trades", he does this very well.

I think most consumers don''t have access to such a person, but rather they go to a jeweler who does "everything" from soldering, to casting, to setting.

Many professions are becoming more highly specialized, and diamond setting is one that I think could bear mention.

So how do you find someone who does strictly diamond setting. Many jewelry stores send their setting work out to a setter. If you have a friendly relationship with a jeweler who sends out his setting work, he MIGHT tell you who in your area does this. But he may not as well, as most likely, the setter services the trade only, or the jeweler would want to send it himself and make a mark up on the work.

But should you be able to find someone who just does setting, I think it is reasonable that you''ll get better work.

I took pictures of my diamond ring under my husband''s work microscope. Looks like all the prongs are sitting on the diamond properly:

Hope this helps a little. :)

Thanks Rockdoc - you''re right... I know you were from Philadelphia - know any setters in that area?

and thanks for the pictures Oleander.
