Hello
35.gif
I have started search for a promise ring. I have only been with my girl friend for three months, but the relation ship is more than I could have thought it would be. I am strapped for cash being in highschool and I would like to know. what the best route to go would be. I really would like to know if any one has any good Ideas as far as if you had it engraved what you might put in it. thank you in advance if anyone answers me

Highschool ! Ok...

It must feel good to be that close to someone, just give it TIME. You''ve got loads and loads of that for now

The least important thing about that ring is the price tag. Surely you know what could be special and meaningful for both of you.

Oh well... I do not know you guys, but for me rings are the only kind of jewelry that must hold some meaning: they connect to people and places and moments worth remembering. Things can get rather unusual from such a start.

Dear Karma,

Your first love is someone you will always remember and I charish the "promise ring" my HS boyfriend gave me...We were together for almost 2 1/2 years and he will always be special to me. That being said, I''d get her something that represents your feelings but is not a "mini" engagement ring-there is plenty of time for that and there are tons of cool RH rings out there that are both cool and can be worn on either hand...Ask your mom/grandma/aunt/sister/etc. if they have anything that could be reset or used-otherwise, try looking at semi-precious stones or pearls instead (cheaper). Can''t wait to see what you find!

well funy thing.. this is my first love... and come summer I will have the money I need because I am taking on two jobs, but I really really want this to be something we decide on together. she told me she didn't want something expensive... but I never listen to her when it comes to money ;) the reason we are getting these is because we made a promise for sexual abstenance. I think thats it atleast lol. :) but there is a reason for the ring ;) it carries alot of meaning I just want something physical to show. the meaning of the promise. I am really dead set on this I really was looking for something that she can in like 10 years look at it and say thats really beautiful.

Look at rings first. Find one that looks really neat (and clearly not and engagment ring style). 14K or 18K gold (try to get Nickle Free allow just in case she develops a nickle allergy later).

When you find a really neat looking ring, have it set with a Cubic Zirconium. I believe "Winks" has some "Ideal" cut CZ''s.

You would be looking for something with stones no larger than say 1/4 carat - otherwise people may confuse it for an engagement ring.

I personally think a channell set pave would style would be grand (say 5 stones - 15 to 20 points each).

Rings are so personal: I suspect that you can find something that will last and always look good for less than a hundred (and perhaps less than $50).

Spend a lot of time looking through old post and at pictures of rings. Anything you see with diamonds set in it can be gotten with CZ in them.

#1 I really really want this to be something we decide on together.

#2 she told me she didn''t want something expensive... but I never listen to her when it comes to money
#1 and #2 do not fit one another very well.

It does sound like a wonderful idea to decide together.

Do you guys have something between you that is very special or meaningful to you?? Is there a particular color she's very fond of? The ring I got (and still have) from my hs boyfriend (we dated for 2 years) was all gold and had a 3-D gold rose on the top because roses were "a thing" that had symbolism and meaning for us. If there is no such symbol for you, would she like a clear stone (cz, etc) or perhaps a semiprecious gem (emerald, ruby, sapphire, etc)?? If you don't have any leads on any of these questions, I'd suggest going to some local jewelry stores and just browsing. We saw the rose ring I have in a store together and I just fell in love with it and the meaning behind it. I think it cost somewhere around $125 or so. I really didn't care if it cost $10 - it was the feeling that came with wearing a ring my boyfriend gave to me with love.

Good luck, and let us know what you decide!

thnx

this has all helped the money wasn''t an issue. I talked to her and she said that, she wanted a silver band one we saw that was only like 12$, it had little diamonds imbewed in it... I am going to ask the jewler what they are and if the ring has nickle, Thnx Perry for that tip, she wants to get "This Is My Promise" I think it would be great and she is getting me a regular silver band for like 18$... is it normal for the girl to get the guy a promis ring???? ;) write soon guys ;) you''re a ton of help :-D

Don''t get a CZ.
If this ring is to hold meaning about caring about each other, please don''t get a cheap artificial stone.

Gold is for later in your life, enjoy your youth.
Silver is a beautiful metal that is appropriately priced so you can select from many beautiful designs.

There are many beautiful real stones you can consider.
Have you looked at garnets?

Just one opinion.

Karma,

Good luck shopping! I agree with Kenny--there are lots of semi-precious stones out there (garnet, blue topaz, amethyst, etc.) that could be really pretty in silver. What''s her favorite color?

Or, have you thought of a ring with her birthstone or yours or both?

My dad gave my mom a 10k white gold ring w/ a diamond "chip" when they were around 17 years old. The ring is two hearts intertwined, w/the diamond in the center of the two hearts. It has etching detail on the underside of the hearts...it is really pretty. I CHERISH this ring, it is so cute to think of my parents in high school...my mom says she practically begged my dad to buy it for her and was sooooo happy when he did!!!! The monetary worth is small I am sure ( 10karat gold) however it was priceless to my mom and when she gave it me, it became my little treasure

JessesGrl,

What a wonderful story! I''m sure you treasure this ring!

Karma, what about something like this?

I''d go for a cheap silver ring. Won''t cost much. Less to worry about in terms of allergies than some ring made of unknown material.

Hi there - how sweet that you want to get a promise ring for your girlfriend, and good for you on your choice to be sexually abstinent! I can tell you from experience that it''s not easy, but how empowering it is to take charge of your own body! I have been with my fiance since high school, and we will be married this summer after 7+ years of dating. We decided early on in our relationship to wait until marriage, and it''s been great - not always easy, but great.

Regarding ring ideas: Have you seen the True Love Waits rings? A plain silver band with the words True Love Waits engraved into the outside. I have a couple friends who wear a ring with a heart, cross, and a key on it. Pearl rings are very sweet for promise rings. Claddagh rings are also classic promise rings, and I''ve seen them set with gemstones too.

Also - listen to your girlfriend regarding money on this purchase. You said yourself you are strapped for cash, and it would be much smarter for you to buy a less costly ring and save that money for college. Books are expensive!! God bless!!

thnx every one

Karma - JCJD has suggested (I think) a great idea. I don''t know if you have heard of claddagh rings before, but they sound like a perfect idea for your purposes. They are really sweet. They are an Irish custom - they are a ring with two hands holding a heart wearing a crown. (See the pic below.) They come in sterling silver and as such are pretty inexpensive.

The hands represent friendship, the crown represents loyalty, and the heart represents love. The way that you wear them demonstrates whether you are "taken" or not. If you wear it with the point of the heart pointing towards your body then you are taken, if you wear it "upside down" with the point of the heart pointing outwards then you are not taken. So by wearing it they are a symbol to others that you two are "for each other." They actually used to be used as wedding rings, I believe, or something very similar to them. They also come in men''s rings which are more "chunky" - so perhaps you could both wear one??

I have one (my parents bought it for me in Ireland) and when I started dating my boyfriend it was a real "symbolic" thing when I switched around which way I wore my ring, pointing the heart towards me. He loved it so much I bought him a men''s one for our first anniversary, which he wears on his pinky. It is chunky and "manly" hahahaha. He really loves it, it has great symbolic meaning for both of us. Something like that might be perfect for you guys. They also make them with a semi-precious stone in place of a silver heart.

You can buy them online (e.g. http://www.the-irish-shop.com), just google Claddagh Ring or something.

Good luck

I''m sure whatever you choose will be perfect.
