I am getting ready to purchase the following stone and would love to have an expert comment on the
1) quality of the stone (anything i''m missing) ?
2) It''s AGS not GIA... Is this an issue?
3) The price is $27,000... What should my "final offer" be?

Any help/ advice would be GREATLY appreciated....

Stone is
AGS 000
2.46 carat
G, SI1
Depth 59.2
Table 60
8.84 x 8.82 x 5.22

The jeweler is telling me the cut is as good as i am going to get...

Thanks in advance

I love my 1.5ct AGS0.

In fact, after talking to my appraiser, the standards for AGS0 are much more strict than GIA ex/ex/ex.

I think with it being an SI1, it just needs to be eye clean.

sounds like a great stone but you''re missing the Crown and Pavilion angle numbers. AGS Certs is one I prefer over GIA. if you run through the stats on the Loose Diamond Comparison Charts, you will see how much diamonds of that quality will run you. Is this second hand stone?

Ditto the use of an appraiser for professional advice, and ditto the general advantage of AGS over GIA.

More details will help us at least confirm some of what you''ve been told, to include things like crown & pavilion angles, and probably better...a report number.

This is some kind of comparable, taking a hit on symmetry. It''s bigger, too.

Do you like it (the one you''ve been told about)?

Otherwise...re negotiation...do use the "Pricescope your diamond" above to effect leverage. This really should help you...showing your store keep a comparable that will cost you less, get you more, etc. It''s better than saying...can we start with 20% off, which you could always do, too.

D&T.. thanks for the response. i have a call in to the jeweler and am attempting to the the other #''s... i''m not exactly sure what you mean by "second hand stone", but i''m buying it from a local retail jewelery store. They got it in "on loan/consignment" from their wholesaler. Does that make sense?

That is how it is done today. Most jewelers only own a few stones the rest come in for specific "memo" calls.
This stone looks fine and the price is fair.

Thanks, Paul. I appreciate the feedack!

Well the price seems reasonable, the only other one I found that is AGS000 is at 29k for 2.33 H VS1 so,,, if you can get even a lower price then kudos.

The crown and pavilion angles would be useful please if you could post those.

The missing piece of the puzzle.... had two requests for the crown and pavillion angles:

crown = 31.2
pavillion = 41.4

again the stone is:
AGS000
2.46 carat
G
very clean SI1
depth= 59.2
table =60
8.84-8.82x5.22

looks like i can buy the stone for $26,000 at a local retailer (their final price). the jeweler tells me her cost is $23,837...

any final thoughts on the cut of the stone, qualiy and or price?

again, thanks in advance for your professional opinion(s).

Do you have the report number? Very suspicious angle to get an AGS0 grade. Also can you give the exact carat weight as printed on the report?

just got the AGS report # 0010195501, she tells me the exact carat weight is 2.46....

but is the table and depth is correct?

it scored a 5.1 HCA on the diamond I'm confuse as to why it is rated AGS triple 0?

How did you get that number? I only get a 2.7, still not a good score and is very far out of the the AGS0 guideline.

Is it possible that this stone may still be rated as AGS0 per AGS''s grading criteria? The AGS0 guideline is only a "guideline" for cutters and manufactureers to have a better chance of hitting the AGS0 grade. Am I correct?

Maybe, I am not sure which is why I ask for the report number and weight to check it out. If it is issued with a Diamond Quality Document report, then it is a true AGS0 else no.

AGS measures up to 3 decimal places for the carat weight, ask her for that.

Then try and bring up the report using this link.

http://www.agslab.com/verify_diamond_grading_report.php
When I tried to enter the info, I got this message:

For more information about this diamond,
please contact a client service representative at
(702) 233-6120 x2003.

I got the same message and called AGS.... they explained why it wasn''t up on-line, but candidly, I didn''t fully understand why..

AGS did verify the report, measurements and the AGS000 rating. I''m not sophisticated enough to challenge any of it... Is it concensus opinion here that the measurements that i''ve provided DO NOT equal AGS 000?

Is the report a diamond quality document report?

If you go to AGS website:

http://www.agslab.com/trade_research_and_development_proportion_based_cut_grade.php

and open the "AGSL Proportion Grades (XLS)", pick the 60% table, 41.4% pavilion angel, you will find:

Table Pavilion Angle Crown Angle AGSL Proportion Grade
60 41.4 31 Ideal
60 41.4 31.5 Ideal

That is the proportion based grade not the performance based grade.

EDT:
Do not mistake the two as the same thing. Proportion based grade is similar to how GIA gives out grading, it is a grade based on the average of the stone, is given on Diamond Quality Report/Gold report. Performance based grading is a light simulation of the actual proportion of the stone, given on Diamond Quality Document/Platinum report.

Stone, I am confused, what is the difference?

the website says:

The new AGS Laboratories Diamond Quality Report features the Proportion-based grading system, and uses an important word descriptor: “Ideal.”

Would the triple 0 on the Gold report less desired than the triple 0 on the platinum report?

If there are IS/ASET images provided together with the report, not much difference. But the cost of the report is different and what the cut grade meant is different.

Basically the new platinum report's cut grade are performance based, gold are proportion based so 2 different methods of cut grading.
