Process: stone + setting = complete ring from online vendor

I'm becoming terribly confused with logistics of buying a stone and setting. What are the pros and cons of buying the stone and setting from the same online vendor and having it sent complete vs buying the stone and setting and having a brick and mortar Jeweler complete the ring?

What is the most common process?

buying stone and setting from same vendor:
pros - easier, less time-consuming, stone is insured by the vendor during setting, usually faster, assured of the correct fit
cons - your selection is limited to the vendor you choose

anything else:
pros - can choose and stone and any setting you want in the entire world
cons - will usually have to insure the stone yourself during setting, more time consuming, need to check with vendors that everything can be done, need to doublecheck stone fit, could have to pay an extra setting fee (if you are buying a setting and stone both online and having a local jeweler set the stone, you WILL have to pay a separate setting fee), may take longer

Most common is definitely getting both the stone and the setting from the same place. The second most common would be getting the stone from one place and the setting from another and having whoever made the setting set the stone.
