in a 4 prong setting is it easy for small diamonds to be chipped just by accidently banging it on a table or something or is that unlikely? how about if the diamonds are in a channel setting with gold pushing over diamond is it more secure or less secure to diamond chipping ?

thanks

Well they chipped in your cross. Thinking you need a new jeweler for future projects.

I agree; it does sound like they chipped your stones based on the pictures and past threads. I am sorry this happened; hope you find a better jeweler next time.

If a stone in a heavy channel set is broke/chipped 99% of the time it was broke during setting and when it isn''t there will be plain signs of damage too the gold.
Does that answer your question?

are you talking about melee size stone in a 4 prong setting like mara''s? if so, then i would think it would be very difficult to chip those, they are protected and even a bang into a table shouldn''t do it, IMO. channel settings are more secure b/c no part of the girdle would be exposed.

thanks for replies guys, so yeah i am getting certain stones on the yellow gold cross reset to make channel look better/show more diamond, my reason for this post was to wonder if its easy for a diamond to chip when mellee size stones (6-8 pointer stones) are set in a 4 prong setting (not even prong it is more like bead setting very small setting size) or if its possible for it to be chipped when it is getting set in a 4 bead setting?

thanks guys let me know

As was already mentioned, your chipping happened during setting. It is very unlikely (when set properly) that a stone should be vulnerable to chipping in a channel with beads. Unless of course you clean your house in your cross etc.

The key is the quality of the setting, as u learnt the hard way last time. Did you find a better jeweller?

I don''t know, but just wanted to say I have been wondering the same thing! I have small diamonds (~7 pointers) set in hoop earrings, and they share prongs in the middle, but are otherwise "open" on the sides. I have a tendency to drop my earrings on my dresser when I put them on/take them off, so I have gotten a bit worried about chipping or otherwise damaging the girdle of the diamonds or any other vulnerable parts (facets?).

I always think of diamonds as being especially durable, but have read more about people''s experiences with chipped/"bruised"/etc. diamonds, so have been getting worried...

Will follow responses to this thread with interest :)

just don''t put them on over a ceramic sink.
Consider putting something soft down where you put them on if you drop them a lot.

so i guess in general you shouldnt be too worried about meelee diamonds in a 4 prong bead setting even if you drop them on the ground or cement or something?

i didn''t say that.....
someone could drop it on wood everyday for a year and nothing happens.
someone else could drop the exact same piece on wood once the day they bought it and it breaks a stone.

if nothing else the diamonds will become lose eventually which is why I recommended something soft be out down.

Sorry to sound rude if I do, but I''m gonna venture out on a limb here to say this seems like a silly question?! Isn''t the point of owning "nice things" like diamond jewellery is that you look after it and that you don''t go dropping it on cement/ground as little as possible?!

As this is a cross on a (supposedly) sturdy chain, I can''t really imagine why you would take it off and drop it, at least while outside? Like strm mentioned, somewhere in the home/bedroom is another story..

Its jewellery, of course you would expect it to be damaged if you drop it on the cement often, no matter how its set..But the question should be how often are u really likely to do this Whotheyare?
If this is a real concern to you, do you have insurance? That would be the short answer to alot of your queries here.

I''d like to make it clear that SYC I''m not referring to ur question, which is reasonable-I too get worried when I knock my ering on something. I think Strm''s advice is a good idea, I would try to get something to put on ur dresser for this purpose like a felt jewellery mat etc?

Again, apologies if I offend anyone with my tone in this post, I just feel the answer is rather obvious

oops - sorry for the late response. Strm - thanks for the advice -- will definitely take it!

Arjunajane - good point re insurance. I agree that it''s important to have. But it would be so sad to damage a diamond and have to put in a claim!
