I''m helping a friend pick out an engagement ring for his girlfriend. I recently got one and I have the 4-prongs (I think). I can''t advise him on this, since I honestly hadn''t even thought about the difference when I picked my own ring. Anyway, I thought I''d check here to see what some of you guys think about the two kinds of prongs and what preferences are out there. He''s looking at a 3/4 carat to 1 carat. Does it matter what size your princess is before determining what kind of prong to get?

I''m not sure the size would matter too much, but princesses in general are fragile at the corners. V-prongs offer more protection against chips than regular prongs. If he gets good insurance though, it really doesn''t matter too much.

My engagement ring is a princess and it set with the V prong. I have not had a problem with it, except it being too loose to begin with, but that was not because of the setting.

When you say a v-prong, do you mean the kind that squares off around the corners (a little like the old-fashioned photograph sticker corners?)

Bezel set is something your friend can consider too.

Ditto

Thanks for the responses. I''ve had no problems with my regular prongs and it looks fine to me. I''ll suggest the bezel option to him also. Thx.

Yes. Those are also less commonly known as chevrons too. They offer slightly better protection than regular prongs.

Yes, the half bezel settings, which expose two full side-views of the diamond, can look great on a princess!
