Hello all! I''m a regular lurker around here, and post every once in a while. I have a few questions regarding a princess cut stone. My brother is planning to get engaged soon, and has enlisted me to help him in his diamond search. Since I''m a novice, I thought I''d ask all of you knowledgable folks for a little help. He wants a princess cut stone (of good quality, obviously) and he''s hoping to get it as close to 1 ct. as possible :) He''s looking for a simple solitaire setting, as well. If you guys could help me/him out that would be fantastic!

On a side note, this is the first of his girlfriends that my sister and I have actually liked, so we''re EXTREMELY excited for him :)

Thanks again!

Kirby

Diamond prices are a direct result of the carat weight, color, clarity and cut quality of the diamond. The cut quality of the diamond has a direct affect upon the visual performance and optical properties of the diamond and this would be my primary focus. Your brother can save a bunch of money by finding a diamond weighing just short of the one carat mark because of the price increase that occurs between the 0.99 - 1.00 carat marks. If your brother wants the diamond to be eye clean (no visible inclusions from a top down perspective) and colorless or near colorless, his budget is more indicative of something in the 0.70 carat range. If he is open to warmer colors such as K/L/M color, he could pick up something in the 0.90 - 0.99 carat range. As a dealer, we''re prohibited from referencing specific diamonds, but hopefully this is helpful in terms of defining a range of possible options for your brother to consider.

Thanks so much, I really appreciate it. I''ll let him know that he might be looking at something more in the .70 carat range. Again, I really appreciate the reply!

*BUMP*

Thank you guys so much! I really appreciate it :) You are all so helpful!

Ditto the other ladies. That GOG stone looks fiiiiiiiiiine!

Also, if his budget is $3000 for just the stone, he could check out this one:
1.03 J/VS1

Some of these would allow room in the budget for a solitaire setting if the $3k is for stone + setting together:
1.05 J/VS1
1.07 H/SI2 - higher color, but hard to tell if it would be eye-clean
1.03 I/VS2 - may be a nice compromise of size, color, and eye-clean clarity
1.08 J/VVS1 - nice size, and would be a good choice if he turns out to be a clarity person

Jstarfireb, thank you so much for the wonderful suggestions! He looked at the GOG stone, and he loves it. I know absolutely nothing about princess cuts!! I have used this wonderful site to educate myself about cushion cuts for my own ring, and it''s been wonderful! Although, after reading so much on here, I understand that each cut holds its own nuances.

So....

I have a question, are princess cuts less/more forgiving when it comes to color? Or is it the same for all the stone "shapes" if it''s cut very well? I know that cut plays such a role in the performance of the stone.

Thanks J! I wonder why it titled the link with a PS name * scratches head* but here is the correct link.

Kirby a top cut Princess will look incredibly white, ask Jon to describe it to you - and also reserve it if seriously interested to prevent it being poached.

I think he''s decided to go with the GOG stone! Thank you all sooooooooo very much! I really appreciate it, and so does my brother!

I''ll be sure to post pics when he gets it :)

Thanks again for all your suggestions!!
