Good afternoon everyone! I was wondering if someone can provide me some insight about the following diamond I''ve been considering:

Cut: Princess
Carat: 2.0
Color: G
Clarity: VS1
Measurement: 7.39x7.09x5.08
Depth: 72%
Table: 73%
Crown: 7%
Pavilion: 62
Polish: Very Good
Symmetry: Good
Girdle: thn polish

What would a fair price be?

Another very important factor is how well it sparkles!

I understand I still need to go see it for myself but want to make sure it''s worth it. From the information provided, is there anything that sticks out as a problem? I appreciate the time anyone takes to reply to my question!

Too small a crown.

What should the crown typically be for the size?

Hi Mike,

This diamond doesn''t look like the best cut stone, what is it you are looking for, the best cut you can get? If so this one won''t work most probably.

Does it have a GIA report?

Around 10% or above is a good measurement. However you can't tell the whole story just by numbers or one measurement, images are always helpful with these shapes such asASET and detailed photographs to get meaningful info on a diamond, however it is fair to suppose that this diamond might show some brilliance in some lights but won't do much else due to the proportion configuration it might not show much fire etc, it looks like a typical commercial cut quality Princess. Is the diamond online or with a jewellery store?

If you are new to this and aren't sure of the difference cut quality makes, check out some of these videos - in particular the ones which show a commercial cut quality Princess compared to one of top cut quality, then you will really see the difference!

Hope this helps~!

The diamond is from a wholesaler. I haven''t seen the grading report yet as I''m just trying to see if it is worth bothering to go in for.

Can someone give me some baseline numbers that I should be looking at? I understand the numbers alone can''t tell the whole story but it can help me determine whether or not I should waste my time going to see certain diamonds. What type of proportion configuration should I be looking at so that it will show fire?

Links from pricescope diamonds would be useful for comparison. Thanks for all the help so far!

This one comes up a lot but if this person sells to the public then he is in fact a retailer. If you want fire in a diamond then this one isn't a good proposition....What I would suggest is to look at some AGS0 cut grade Princess ( Jareds have them) so you can see how a well cut stone behaves then you might decide to go for an AGS0 Princess yourself from the seller of your choosing. There are various proportion configurations which can work, as a guide here is a chart you can use but do use it as a guide only, bear in mind that the numbers only give a chalk outline of the diamond.

Here are some example diamonds for you to look at of top cut quality.

Lorelei, thanks for the links, very helpful! This person doesn''t sell to the public, she sells to retail outlets and will also sell to individuals if they are referred by someone she knows (so maybe that''s still considered retail?).

I appreciate your help. I''m looking between 1.7 - 2.0c and now I know ideal cut. Just trying to get more familiar with what to look for and how it''s supposed to look, which the links you provided help with.

So now that I know that what I posted isn''t what I want, what do you think the price of what I posted would be? I figure if I see something else from this person that I actually like I can see if she is way off on prices!

Most welcome! If you did have a Jareds in the area so you could view some AGS0 Princess in person that would really be helpful so you can see what a difference cut makes, especially compared to the usual commercial quality Princess.

Before I can comment on price with the diamond you posted, does it have a GIA report? The type of grading report can have a big influence on pricing. From a quick search above, bearing in mind online prices are usually less than from a store, similar size Princess with GIA reports of the same colour and clarity and cut quality are going for around $14 - $16k.

Yes, it does have a GIA report. I haven''t seen it yet though. If I can get a picture of it I''ll post it. I will definitely check out Jareds.

Thats fine! From the info we have and from what you said I don't think this diamond will be what you are looking for, but it doesn't hurt to look, but before you make a decision do try to view some AGS0 Princess from Jareds as this will give you a good idea of how well cut diamonds behave. These stones are called Peerless I believe which are the Jareds brand.

Is this much closer to what I''m looking for?

It''s hard to tell if that is what you are looking for bc its hard to judge princess cuts without pictures or most importantly an ASET.

Do you have a certain criteria besides a princess that sparkles that you would like...?

Here is a great one: http://www.whiteflash.com/aca_princess/Whiteflash-ACA-Princess-cut-diamond-2179264.htm#

Ditto Breann, its really difficult to tell without images so best to stick to vendors that can supply photos and ASET images.

Nice pick B !!!

Does this vendor carries any AGS0 cut graded princess? This will be the safest best to buy with images. Stones with the new AGS DQD/Pt report will sometimes comes with a computer generated ASET image, making it easier to judge a princess cut without seeing it.

I should have the GIA report today. The price for the one above is 12k.

I''ve spent some time reading all the links everyone has provided and have a quick question. If I''m looking for an ideal/excellent cut pricess like AGS 0 or 1, is it possible for the diamond to have a 73ish% table and a 72ish% depth? From what I''m reading the table should be between 62-68%.

Can some please explain a little more with what the table/depth relation explains for a princess diamond?

maybe, probably not as I have yet to seen one AGS0 of that proportion. AGS to not go by proportion but by the light returns using ASET.

There are various proportion configurations which can work although I haven't as yet seen one with those proportions get AGS0, AGS base their cut grading on light performance which can allow for deserving diamonds to get AGS0 or AGS1 etc. Polish and symmetry grades also need to be ideal to get AGS0.

Attached is the CERT the person provided. I''ve asked for ASET images as well as if they carry AGS 0/1 merchandise. Thanks again everyone.

Images would tell us more, also you could ask them if they could run a Sarin scan on the diamond, this gives more detailed measurements , but the images are the most important thing here. You would definitely need to get an independant appraisal done on this stone, I believe it has been graded by EGL Turkey.
