Princess or Brilliant cut in compass setting...PLEASE HELP!

Hiya,

I know this is down to personal preference but I'd really value everyone's opinion on what looks best in this type of setting.

I really want to get my partner a compass setting with a twist shank. I have ordered two loose diamonds which are both beautiful. (they are not the stones in the pictures.)

I'm more interested to see what people think looks best in this setting rather than which stone is better quality etc. I understand it's personal preference but it would be really nice to see what people think.

As loose stones the brilliant cut probably just edges it in terms of quality however the princess is larger for roughly the same price.
The brilliant cut is 0.8 carat, F colour, VS2, Excellent cut.
The princess cut is 1.01 carat, E colour, SI, very good cut. (even under microscope the inclusions are hardnly noticable.)

In the attached picture the princess is 1.00 carat and roughly the same quality. The brilliant cut in this picture is 0.7 carat and not as good quality in any of the 4 C's.

As loose stones i'd go for the brilliant cut that i've ordered in. However part of me wonders if the princess cut looks better in this setting.

I'd really appreciate as much feedback as possible.....i really want to get this right!!!!!

I asked her and she said princess at first but when i took her past a window the first one she pointed out was a brilliant cut! Maybe she's trying to confuse me!

I think like me her opinion is not made up purely by the diamond itself but by what the whole package looks like.

I'm not asking her any more questions as i want it to be a surprise.

Again, i'm really just asking what other peoples opinions are on what looks best in this setting so if you can comment that would be great.

Hmm is she truest likes both equally I would prob go with the best quality you could get. So I'd you budget allows for a bigger an better quality princess I would go with thT.

Also- I would purchase from someplace with a great trade-in and upgrade policy so that if she changes her mind she can get a different stone...

I prefer the princess in that setting. I usually prefer rounds.

Although I prefer rounds for myself, I prefer the princess in that setting. To my eyes, the twist and kite (compass) details of the setting are lost with a round diamond.

Thanks so much for the replies. Remember the round diamond i have ordered is a 0.8 carat and better quality than the 0.7 in the picture.

The princess really accentuates the kite setting...the round not so much. So if you like the compass setting to be more
obvious then it would be the princess stone. If you want the compass setting to just be a small detail of the setting then
maybe the round.

Edit - have you thought about a wedding band? Those settings make it a little difficult to find a wedding band to go with
them (not impossible but a little more difficult).

I have looked at wedding bands and as you say it does reduce the number of options however i did see some that i think my partner would like. I think she would rather compromise a little on the wedding band in order to get the engagement ring she loves. She's mentioned that she likes something that is subtly different and i think the compass/kite setting offers that without being too in your face.

I like the round better. The princess looks a little off to me.

I think the setting suits a princess better but would get the round for sparkle factor. Unless we are talking a solasfera princess

I like both but the princess really stands out more in this setting. the round looks regular until you take a closer look.

I find that the 'twist' setting as such, showcases the princess better. It accentuates the "point" of the princess corners better where as the round just looks like the sides are off kilter.

I'm a princess vote!
