Opinions on this diamond please. My finance bought this for me but when I look at other 1 carat princess diamonds they look bigger. I get the feeling that mine is not a good cut. It''s very eye clean and sparkles like crazy. I''m just not happy with the size of it on my hand compared to other 1 carats we had looked at together.

I''m not really happy with it but I don''t want to hurt his feelings. I just feel like he might have been steered in the wrong direction by the sales person.

Here''s the additional paperwork that came with it...

hi there!

hate to confirm your suspicions re: size but my 0.85 princess cut''s dimensions are: 5.17 X 5.42 mm so yeah, your 1 carat is smaller than mine.

as far as being a good cut, judging a princess is not as easy to determine as a round brilliant. things like table percentage, depth percentage, etc is needed to be looked at. if you find the chart for AGS princess cut standards, you can see where your diamond falls. the smaller the number the better the cut.

the MOST important thing to keep in mind, though, is: do you like your diamond? if it sparkles like crazy and is eye clean then it sounds like it makes you happy!

No, I''m extremely disappointed with it, but I don''t have much of a choice as the place won''t take it back b/c they apparently brought the diamond in for him. I have no idea what to do now.

Hi Cassidy,

Anita is absolutely right, the main thing is if you love it! Princess shapes can be tricky concerning spread or face up size, as they can hold and hide weight in various ways, whereas with rounds the depth can relate to spread, in fancy shapes this isn't a reliable indicator. So it is important to remember also that you can't always get a good idea compared to other Princess or even rounds as there can be so many variables.

As to what to do about it, well it depends. Is this the one factor you are not happy with? I don't know what would be best for you to do, you know your BF best and if broaching the subject would really hurt his feelings...Or even if you are still able to return it. Difficult situation, but if you can, try to enjoy your beautiful ring which your beloved picked out for you, it does sound as if it is a very lovely stone! Maybe sometime in the future, you might be able to upgrade and keep this original diamond used in a pendant?

ETA - I see you posted Cassidy that you are not happy with it. I am so sorry...

I had the same problem with my first diamond. I really wanted a 1.5 carat asscher, but didn''t know that they faced up smaller than round diamonds of that size. I had tried on 1.5 carat rounds and loved the way they looked on my hand, so I was surprised hom small the 1.64 ct asscher that my husband bought me looked on my hand. It was cut very deep, and only faced up about the size of a .8 ct round.

We eventually traded the asscher in for a larger round brilliant, and now I''m happy with the size of the stone. I hate to say it, but square cuts face up the smallest - if I had known that before we had gone shopping, I probably would have picked an RB to begin with (that''s what my husband wanted to get me anyway).

He was a little hurt when I first told him that I wanted to switch my diamond, but since I was the one that picked out the diamond, in the end, he just wanted me to be happy. When I explained to him that the cut of my stone wasn''t that great, he was fine with switching it for a well-cut stone, because he felt that for such an expensive purchase, we should be happy with it.

Anyway, I would talk to him about trading or exchanging the ring if it really bothers you ...

just a thought..... if after exploring your options you find you must keep the stone, how about changing the setting? you could do a halo or a three stone to give it more presence on your finger. this might be a good option considering you said the diamond is beautiful.
