Hi, I''m new here and found out about this website. Well I''m posting because I plan to propose to the girl of my dreams however she''s moving to another country this weekend. I need to make a decision quick. I found a Echo Princess Cut 1.04 ct Grade G(Fluorescense....Faint, Blue) VS1 for about $4800. The proportions are

Dept: 73%
Table 77%
Girdle Midium to Slightly Thick Polished
Culet None
Finish
Polish Good
Symmetry Very good.

Description of articles: 1 loose diamond
Key to symbol Cloud Crystal Natural Extra Facet
Cert if AIG

I really want to pull the trigger on this. Please let me know if its a good buy.

Also I was using this Cut Grading Form for a princess cut stone however I dont know what the Crown Height Percentage is since I have an AIG Cert. Is there a way to find out or do the calculation manually?

http://www.gemappraisers.com/
under Cut Grading Form

Thanks again

Price sounds good for a 1ct G/VS1 princess, though I''m not sure what "echo" means. Is it a specialty cut?

The most important part now is evaluating whether you''re looking at a well cut stone or not. With fancy shapes, it''s very difficult to judge cut quality just by the numbers. A good rule of thumb is to look for a table near or less than the depth, and very good to ideal/excellent polish and symmetry. Since your stone doesn''t fit these guidelines, I''d move on. If I were you, I would take a look at some AGS ideal princesses (Jared is one store that sells them, if there''s one in your area). This will give you an idea of what a cream-of-the-crop princess looks like, and you can decide if other stones are good enough. Also, see if you could get an ASET image, and make sure you take a good look at the diamond in various lighting conditions (not just jewelry store lighting) before you buy.

yeah the echo is some robbins brothers special cut. it has more facets i think then the regular one. thank you for your reply. Oh since the table is not less than or equal to the depth I should move on? i contacted the person and they have it for $4500 after tax. to me it sounds good but should i still make the purchase?

thanks for your help and future thanks to anyone else that responses.

77% table is kind of big... I usually prefer a cutoff of 73/74

what are the length and width measurements?

It is a branded cut, this could make a difference.

When you say branded cut you mean that its a Echo Diamond right by RB? Is that a good thing or a bad thing? The cert is AIG and here are the dimensions: 5.88 x 5.4 x 3.96

I''m really worry now. I thought the price was good but now people are making it seem ok. I tried the Cut Grading from gemappraisers.com and it shows its about a 2a to 2b but not sure because the AIG cert does not contain the Crown Height %. Is there a way to manually calculate it for a princess cut?

Yes, as in this info - http://www.robbinsbros.com/rings-diamonds-jewelry/diamonds/fancy-shapes-specialty-cuts.asp I don't know anything about this brand, but it is possible that a larger table could be a typical feature of the cut, so judging these by the standards we use for ordinary Princess may not work in this case. Concerning the price, typically brick and mortar jewellers can be more expensive than online. Are you definitely set on one of these, or is there a jeweller which carries AGS0 cut grade Princess near you?

I dont have that many places near me. but a few people i did ask said it was good but they weren''t the experts. and when i stumbled across this site im hoping it can educate me further about this diamond. when i did see it i saw it compared to another princess cut that was 1.06 but it looked alot and i mean alot smaller than the 1.09, and he the guy said it was due to the cut of the diamond. so he was really selling me on this diamond. but he said if i get it from him the diamond would be 4500 and 1900 for a custom platinum band. so now im stuck, but if you guys really think i should move on then i will take your advice and move on.

thanks for your help.

lasdj,

It is so difficult, as sometimes branded cuts can't be judged in the same manner as you would a more typical Princess for example, so it is so hard to know whether this Echo Princess is well cut or not...AGS0 Princess are sold by Jareds as Jstar mentions earlier, so if there is a store in your area you could look at some, also these are more readily available from an online vendor, or even some GIA Princess if sold and recommended by a known vendor can be excellent stones, are you open to the possibility of buying online?

I''ll check out a Jared...i see on about 60 miles away from me so i''ll head there later today. I would actually want to buy it in person. thanks for your help then. you have been very helpful.

As a clarification, I would recommend going to Jared just to look at their AGS0 princesses and compare them to other stones, not to buy from them, because their markup is huge! Just get an idea of what a well cut princess should look like, and guide your search from there.

I would also suggest not making this huge decision on such a time crunch! Could you propose the next time she comes to visit, or maybe propose without a ring (or get her a less expensive colored stone ring as a placeholder)? Buying a diamond shouldn''t feel rushed.

But you are most welcome, glad to help!
