I''ve only had my princess cut diamond since december ''05. and already i''ve had to have it repaired twice because the stone loosens. since the first repair (two months after i got it) i have hardly worn it..only when i was out of the house and now i need to take it in again because the stone is loose again. it''s not even a big diamond by any standards- 3/4 carat.
i always have taken it off when cleaning, doing the dishes or any other activity that may harm/damage/loosen the diamond. and i have been extremely careful not to hit it on anything. the setting does not have the v-prongs, i believe they are called ''dots'' (correct me if i''m wrong).
should this be a reoccuring problem? or is that the hazzard of having a princess cut diamond. my fiance and i are seriosly considering trading it in for a different shape - though i really love my princess one

Hello Tocc, and welcome to PS. The folks here are great!

I am certainly not an expert, but this doesn''t sound normal to me. I have a princess solitare (also since 12/05), and have not had any issues with the security of the stone. I do have a jewelers loupe, and inspect it once a week.

Sorry to hear about the problems with your ring. Do you happen to have pictures of it? Also, what did they tell you when you brought it in for repair?

i didn''t think that it was normal either. all they told me was "your center stone is loose" i was extremely surprised when the lady told me. they repaired it and i thought that would be the end. next time i stop in there, i am going to have to ask them why it has happened two times now.
as for a picture, i''m working on it now.

You may have a setting problem, not a diamond shape problem. Maybe you should think about changing how your diamond is set, especially if you love your princess. I have a princess stone in my wedding ring and its channel set on two sides. Very secure setting, never had any problems in 10 years of wearing it every day! A skilled setter can set your diamond securely, in prongs or any other setting you choose. Maybe you just need to find a more experienced benchman to look at your ring and see if your setting can be made more secure somehow.

Good luck!

I know that the V prongs are the most secure for a princess because it is like having two prongs on every corner and it also protects to corners the best which are the most sensitive spots on a princess. I am waiting on my princess but picked out everything for it, and I wanted to see all my different options for the prongs but since mine is big (almost 3.5 carats) the jeweler insisted that we use the V prongs for security and protection. I am glad that we went with them because I think they actually make the diamond look alot bigger. IMHO I would consider V prongs for your stone, you shouldn''t have to be worrying about it all the time.

OK I''ve posted it for you.

Princess Ring Setting 4-2006.jpg

The shape of your diamond isn''t the problem, your prongs are. I have the V-shape and wouldn''t have any other kind for a princess. I''m also a big believer in 6 prong for rounds for that extra security.. .but I''m protective like that, lol.

Anyway, it sounds like you need a new head. Do you want to keep the prongs you have or would you be ok switching to a more traditional (standard) v-shape head? Can you post a picture of your setting? It may not even be possible to have a V-shaped head.

Anthter possibility is your jeweler just isn''t tightening the progns correctly.

I''ve attached a picture of mine so you can see what hte v-shape head looks like.

Yup, I definitely think you have a setting problem. I think V-caps are a great idea, but I''m not sure if they can be changed on your setting because of the design. You need to confer with an experienced jeweler who can advise you. You should not be having these kinds of problems with your ring. Maybe an exchange or refund from the store you purchased it from is in order?

thanks SuzyQZ.. i could''t figure how to get the file small enough.
and i believe that i''m going to have to get a whole new setting.. if you look at mine from the side, the diamond just appears to be floating in mid-air. a beautiful effect, but as i learned the hard way, not the safest/most secure. because i live an hour from the jeweler next time i drive up there, which is going to be soon, i''ll see what they can do for a refund/exchange or whatnot.
i''m glad to have my suspicions confirmed- that it is the setting, and not the diamond

Your setting is really beautiful. The open and floating effect is a very attractive quality. Hopefully your jeweler will work with you to either insure your stone is set properly so that it won''t become loose or maybe you can find a setting with similar characteristics that is more secure (i.e., v-cap prongs or similar). You shouldn''t have to give up the look you like. I''m sure you will find something. Bottom line. You should be able to wear your ring everyday and not worry about it. Just take it in for regulary scheduled "prong checks" which I think is once every six months and then be able to just "forget about it".

THANKS to everyone for their advice. i''m glad i decided to post here. if anyone''s interested i''ll let you all know how it turns out... until then-

tocc,

about a month after i got my princess, i had to had my prongs tightened, but i think it was just the prongs.
february2003, i have prongs like yours, and since then i''ve had no problems at all. :)
