Hello,

I've been searching for a princess cut diamond and have recently found one for a great price. However, it has an 80% table and an 80% depth. It looked fine using the naked eye. In what ways will the large table and high depth % affect the diamond? Here are the full specs (or what I can remember....)

GIA Cert
1.21 Ct
G
SI2
80% Table (rounding)
80% Depth(rounding)

I cannot see any inclusions with the naked eye. The jeweler has offered to sell the diamond for $5k and give me a great setting with .77ct in it for another $1,000. Is this a good deal? I know it's very difficult to say with out more information and pictures, but I guess I just want to know if that even sounds reasonable. The diamond looked great to me, but then again, I'm no expert.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks.

L to W ratio was 1.04. I'll post more if I can remember.

What is the face-up size?

I don't know much about princess cuts, but 80% depth sounds really, really deep.

If you look at the specs on the diamond search, most princesses seem to have a depth of about 75% and a table of about 70%. The AGS Ideals seem to have smaller tables. OKay, and PS search does not have a single princess cut with a depth greater than 76%. If 80% is the true depth, I would be very wary.

Always include diameter when you give specs on a stone, because as distracts points out, the result of stones being too deep often is that they are smaller in diameter. I think it is a little deep and the table is a little large, though. I'd keep looking!

I am going to post a couple of well cut princess cut stones and you can get an idea of what the measurements should be:

I believe the measurements were 5.77 by 5.55. Not sure if that helps.

can you post the lab report? how thick is the girdle?

edit: if you don't have the report, you can call the jeweler and ask for the report # and then we can look it up.

yeah, I think his measurements are off, because he stated before that the l/w is 1.04

5.77 / 5.55 = 1.0396. I am calculating the L/W wrong?

nope your calculating it correctly, it's a matter of preference, your stone will have a more enlongated appearance than if it was 1.01 or so which would be much more square. GIA states that a diamond is square if it's l/w is .95-1.05 so it's still square. I have an asscher that is 1.06 and though it is enlongated it still appears more square than rectangular and people always confuse it for a princess cut.

It's just preference. =)

and actually it was my fault when I posted before, I had your measurements mixed up.

Based on your measurements, it looks like it is facing up more like a 1.1ct or smaller diamond (using AGS 0 princesses as the reference point). It's not a suuuuper huge difference, but given the depth, I would be concerned that it would impact performance. As well, the well-cut princesses with your specs seem to be going for about a thousand dollars more, and that price discrepancy gives cause for concern as well. I really don't know how else to judge it without an ASET. I would not buy without an ASET based solely on the fact the information I do know of this diamond makes me wonder about how it will perform. If you are buying this in person, you could order an ASET, read the tutorials, and then look at it yourself with the ASET to judge the performance.

Would have to see the ASET on the princess you found. That table at 80 is way too large IMO. Not enough info. on your princess cut to really give you any feed back but most do not have that large of a table.

Here are a few I found that have ASETS to give you an idea of what you are looking for.
The first 3 have ASETs and you can tell the difference in the performance of the stones from the ASETs. Watch GOG’s videos on princess cuts so you can educate yourself before you buy.

I'm sure there are other vendors that will do an ASET for you as well. But by all means educate yourself first. Great videos here:
