I was at Tiffany's today sneakily trying on one of their bangles to gauge sizing for a Whiteflash one I'm ordering and ended up looking at some of their rose gold earrings.

The stuff is obviously not cheap but what struck me as interesting is that some of the non diamond jewellery is somewhat affordable. The mark up doesn't seem as insane when it's just their 18k gold. But they had one or two weeny diamonds and the price goes nuts.

Why is this? Anyone have a theory?

I've concluded they are the only accessible place for good basic rose gold stuff! I might get a pair of earrings if the RG bangle works out!

They are a luxury brand, and a household word.
Their name is synonymous with a certain high standard.
They are selling a lifestyle, and every woman *wants* something from a little blue box, even if it is a
mere trinket.
Adding a famous "Tiffany" diamond, even a tiny one, to a basic gold piece is their license to jack up the price astronomically.
Purchasing from Whiteflash is a good idea, and you will get a much better deal!

This.

Add a label on something, make it unobtainably expensive to us mere plebs, and bingo - you've got yourself a luxury brand that people with lots of money will pay lots of money for, simply because it is known that it costs a lot of money...

If you can afford such luxuries, that is great - but buy knowing you are paying a large markup for that little label!

If you were looking at Rose gold you have to be careful to make sure if it's 18k rose gold or their "rubedo" which is only 8 or 10k gold and the rest is mostly copper. That's why those pieces are more in line with "normal". But then when you compare them to the value of other 10k good pieces you see the insane Mark up.

I quite liked these which were not cheap but okayish I thought:

http://www.tiffany.com.au/jewelry/e...owse&trackpdp=rv&fromcid=287464&trackgridpos=,

But if you look at something like this:

http://www.tiffany.com.au/jewelry/e...se&trackpdp=bg&fromcid=287464&trackgridpos=40

The price went from $2,500 AUD to $6,300 AUD

There is 0.57 cts of diamonds and cost to set but the price jump is so high.

And then their diamond bows which are gorgeous

http://www.tiffany.com.au/jewelry/e...se&trackpdp=bg&fromcid=287464&trackgridpos=57

$11,900 AUD.

Are they that much harder to make? Or is it the Tiffany bow design they are charging for? Such a severe jump!

I love Tiffany but I buy most pieces on eBay for that reason.
