Running around looking at various stones lately but left my notes at home because my girlfriend was around and i could not get them without her noticing. Will post the specs on those stones tonight or tomorrow when i get a chance. Below is one i ran into today at lunch. If anyone can tell me if this is a decent stone/price or what would be a decent price i would greatly appreciate it. Thanks. Smile.

shape: round brilliant
6.66 - 6.72 x 4.20 mm
weight: 1.16
Depth: 62.8
Table: 55
Girdle: Thin-Slightly Thin, F
Culet: N
Pol: Ex
Sym: VG
Clar: VS2
Col: H
FL: N

$6300

Also, do stone prices vary by geographical area much? Can i buy the same stone in some areas for cheaper than others?
i.e. northeast vs.southeast, city vs. town, many jewelry stores or booths next to each other (like jewelry exchange) vs. only jewelry store in town, etc.

welcome to ps!

i like your title ''pricing question part 1''
hmmm...how many parts will there be?

if you go to the top of the page, you can use the ''pricescope your diamonds'' search tool to find some pricing comparisons in your range.

Well, let''s see. As comparison, here is a stone that is among the top cuts, and the PS price is $7113, and it''s graded by AGS.

So, if your stone is accurately graded (don''t know which grading lab graded your stone), then I''d guess it''s not a top-cut stone (and that shows in the depth). However, that''s also taken into account in the pricing, so it seems like a good price for what it is.

thanks for the welcome belle. naturally i will have as many parts as it takes to make sure i get the right rock for my gfriend. lol.

i am not shocked that the same specs listed on the pricescope shows $5709 as opposed to the $6300 quoted to me. question is how much can i start haggling with when dealing with most sellers? 10,20%. how about on the band itself? does it matter if i get the diamond from one jeweler but the rock from another? does one really get a good deal if they have 1 jeweler do everything, (diamond, band, mount, box, etc.) or is this just more fluff to roll everything together and confuse the buyer on the actual price.

also, i found this spreadsheet on various methodologies for a good stone. is this a good roadmap to start with?

back to the stone today, when asked if the stone was inscribed with the GIA cert i was told that it came from the NY office and they are so busy there that they usually do not have the time to do it unless it is specially requested. they told me that most of the inscribed stones are from LA. what''s your take on this?

thanks for the help.

thanks for the reply aljdewey. the stone you posted was ''a cut above H&A''. how can i tell if a GIA stone is at a premium level like that? any way to know off the top of my head without bringing the specs online everytime?

Ngage,

I'd first mention that the option Al found is the obvious comparable on the search by cut db here.

Re this methodology, I see he borrows from Dave Atlas' typology that is listed here, in the tutorial, but which Dave now considers semi-prehistoric. (edited to add...it also, I think, presumes a strategy where the site host directs you to an advertising jeweler; here, the goods are presented, and you pick yourself...). Consider at least checking out my methodology below my signature.

Re GIA grading reports, I think you always need to get the numbers. With a modern AGS grading document, you may be off the hook, and only need to see AGS0 (but modern means it discusses light performance, and has only been available since 6/05).

Well, with GIA stones, you typically can''t tell unless the vendor provides Sarin or OGI data, too. The GIA grading reports don''t give data about cut proportions, unfortunately. GIA is in the throes of a process to include "cut" as part of their grading, but it is a way down the road yet and not helpful for you right now.

AGS stones, however, do provide all the cut proportion data, so if you want to have more information about cut, perhaps considering AGS stones would be more fruitful.
