I am going shopping very soon for an engagement ring and I have no idea on what I should pay for a diamond. My Finace would like the following ring
K or better , SI2 or better, 1-2 ct, White Gold,
How much should I pay per ct? Please help. A friend of mine told me between $1200-$1800 ct. Any advice would be a great help.
thanks

You will be paying much more than that per carat. How much more is up to you.

It's like any other consumer product. There are a variety of offerings from basic to high end and you need to figure out for yourself where you fall on that continuum.

Go out and look and diamonds. Look at the different color and clarities. Look at different diamond shapes and different quality of cuts. Then balance your budget against what your eyes prefer. You can then punch your preferences into pricescope and see what some real stones are being offered for.

Mostly, have some fun with it. Spending such big $$ shouldn't be a chore!

hello!

i will give you one piece of advice that even me, who isn't an expert, will be the best given. go to the pricescope home page and just run a search of whatever shape size and parameters you want for a diamond. as for search engines this is the best out there and you will be getting the best price range estimates imaginable. have fun and good luck, let me give you some warning...be prepared to sit for hours upon hours cuz its addicting!!!

viscera or parietal? Ortho or CT surg?

haha parietal!!!

ya know i should change my little tag line now...when i had wrote that litte closing statement thing i was just about to begin my residency in orthopedics, however, for some reason i deferred my residency and am studying now for my doctorate in physical therapy. i want to do sports medicine and i just don't know about the physician side of things, i kind of like the more hands on approach instead of surgery. thus, i am debating to be an MD or sports physical therapist....anyway sry, got off topic back to sparkly diamonds!!!

How about PM&R.... Nice pay, VERY NICE lifestyle (not too many PM&R emergencies) and in VERY HIGH DEMAND.

OR..........

Do IM or FP followed by a fellowship in sports medicine.... Choose the programs wisely and you could even get some hands on experience at some big time college sports teams or pro sports teams doing special electives.....

This is just about the widest cast net !

And... what shape would this be? Assuming rounds: the price per carat would go from about $2k for a one carat K/SI2 to $15k for a one carat D-IF. Prices per carat increase with size, so a 2cts K/SI2 would be about 3.5k/carat and a 2cts D/IF about 18k/ct. I was just trying to picture what huge range of prices you were talking about!

To get to the price range indicated by your friend, would be eitehr to expose yourself to serious fraud (and there are plenty of shoddy gem reports, missrepresented goods... and such) or who knows? Maybe risk again and pick a ring from a non-professional seller (newspaper add, who knows?).

Also, these prices take into account the way the diamonds are cut. And it is the cut that makes them 'sparkle' - otherwise the material is just transparent and colorless

. To get a severely discounted gem , you'd have to look for a badly cut one... if this really makes sense.

But, I really thing there is a better solution than hoping to get the one 'deal' out of a see of doubtful bargains. Most of 'badly cut' relatively cheap and relatively inexpensive stones are far HAVIER than the well cut ones of the same size. And prices are very much dependent on weight...

Does this make sense?

Maybe the little video tutorial on THIS page does

It's very simple, to find out what you should pay for a diamond go on different websites check out the catagories that you are interested ie..color,cut, clarity, size and most important in your case Price.
Most internet vendors are qorking on a very low markup,so the prices you'll see are as good as you can get.

good luck
