hi nlehle, welcome.

Can you tell us more about the diamond? Is it a round? What is the name of the cut?
What do you mean "close to ideal"? Who graded the cut/color/clarity?

I think Good Old Gold and Solomon Brothers sells the 81. Do you have anymore info for it?

Interesting Skippy. Eighternity is an 81 facet, but the one I googled came up with another type of 81 facet but with different faceting. Guess there''s more than one type of 81 facet diamond out there.

I''m not really sure if the price is reasonable. I would contact goodoldgold.com and see what their prices are for similar branded extra facet stones to compare.

Have you seen this diamond in person? I was also interested in an ''extra'' facet cut stone, namely the Solasfera. I called in a ~1 ct Solasfera and 2 idea cut RBs of larger size (and similar or lesser price) to a local appraiser for a personal look. The Solasfera earned slightly higher GemEx scores, but once you saw all three side by side the Solasfera''s price premium was not worth the marginal (if even marginal) difference in light performance. Perhaps on a larger stone, but on a 1 ct stone, my personal opinion is that you could put that money premium into a larger ideal cut RB. The key was seeing these side by side, otherwise you are just imagining a difference based on a sheet of paper that in the real world may not be perceptable. I wrote a thread on my experience. Now there are a lot of happy people with these proprietary cuts and I''m happy for them, but in the end all these decisions are personal, and for me it was not worth it. Just make your decision on the best info you have and for me that is a personal look.

OK THE REST OF THE DETAILS ARE:
SHAPE:ROUND
CERTIFICATION:IGI
DEPTH TOTAL=59.3%
TABLE=58.1%
POLISH=GOOD
SYMMETRY=GOOD
GIRDLE=SLIGHTLY THICK-THICK
PLEASE ADVICE ASAP. THANK YOU.

I don''t know if the same kinds of stats apply to 81 facet stones, but for a regular round brilliant, that would be far too shallow.

Also, the super thick girdle is costing you $$$ for face-up you can''t see.

Top that all off with the fact that it''s IGI (not the most reputable) so that you''re probably getting at least two grades lower in the colour and clarity department, adn I don''t think this is such a hot deal.

I''m not a super-expert, though! Especially with 81 facet stones.

I don't like the sym and polish just good. For $6,800 it seems high; you can do better. Tell us what you are looking for and we can try and help. Welcome to Pricescope, by the way

Here is a very nice RB in the same price range and F color and I bet it will perform better than that stone you referenced above.

Here''s another, larger and D color and in the same price range

Finally, if you are willing to reduce color you can get this very nice 1.287ct for $6,500. I''ve seen this stone in person and it is beautiful (https://www.pricescope.com/community/threads/compared-two-rbs-and-a-solasfera.64993/) . Don''t be put off by the color. It faces up beautifully becuase it lights up so well. In a solitare this would make a great ring.

I''m sure with the PS search tool you can find even more examples.

COULD ANYONE SUGGEST WHAT THE ESTIMATED VALUE OF THIS DIAMOND MAY BE? MY FIANCE LOVES THE FIRE OF THE DIAMOND AND WANTS TO GET THE ROCK. WHAT IS THE HIGHEST I SHOULD BE PAYING FOR THIS? THANK YOU.

Honestly, I''d stay away from it if only because of the IGI cert. IGI is notorious for being unreliable in its gradings. Stick with GIA or AGS, or if you must, EGL USA (and then buy a stone a grade or two higher than what you would normally be comfortable with). You can definitely drop color and even clarity to G-H, SI1-SI2 and the diamond will look identical to this G/VS2.

As others mentioned, check out the Eighternity at Good Old Gold if you want an 81-facet stone. There are a few on GOG, but they''re pricey. This one is going for about the same price as you would have bought the other one for. It has better polish/symmetry and a GIA cert, plus GOG has a good upgrade policy.

However, more facets doesn''t mean more sparkle. It just means that the bigger flashes of light are broken down into smaller ones. It''s all personal preference. If your fiancee likes fire, she may actually like an ideal cut RB more than an 81.

I doubt anyone will be willing to tell you what the diamond is worth based on the limited info in this thread. If you want to get an idea of what $6800 will buy you in a good to very good cut stone (like this one might be) just do some searches on this site. But beware that the IGI cert of this stone may be overstating the color and clarity and maybe even cut. Most of the stones you find on PS that have ideal cuts will be AGS or GIA certs and are more reliable. Also in the beginning of this thread you said this stone was close to ideal cut yet that is not intuitive by the other info you provided (esp with good sym and think girdle). This leads me to believe a sales person has suggested this to you and is pushing you to make a purchase. Personally I wouldn't buy it.

If your FI likes sparkle and thinks this stone has it, I'd highly suggest you find a stone of the calibre suggested above to see. You may have a hard time finding those in a B&M but you can if you look hard enough (go to a Tiffany's if you can). Those stones will sparkle and I'd bet more than the 81 facet stone based on those stats and will knock your FI's socks off. Plus you are paying a slight premium on that stone due to its special cut that may not be maintained in the resultant value of the ring.

If you really want to know what it is worth, arrange to take the stone to an independent appraiser and get their expert opinion. After all, you are about to put down almost $7,000 on a tiny rock, I think that deserves a second opinion!
