Hi there

I am totally new and have NO CLUE about this stuff! I am looking for a 4 ct u-prong eternity, round stones size 5 3/4. What price range should I expect? I want something sparkly and pretty but have no clue about clarity, etc. I basically want the cheapest thing I can get away with and still look nice. A friend suggested G-H color stones and SI1-2 clarity I work in medicine and wash my hands often so I want something that will not trap water and will be low profile. Thanks for any help/ideas!

I'll take a stab since you are asking a general question, my guess is that would need about 16-17 stones, maybe 20-25 points each. Depending on what you went with, 20 or 25 points, would determine cost along with metal choice. 14 k gold would be cheapest, then 18k gold, then platinum. I would still recommend going with platinum. Other specifics might change the price a bit. I agree with your friend, you can save money by going lower color G/H/I and Si1/Si2. But expect the lower end of that range if the price is good. Sparkliness is due to cut, that's why we say cut is king. I give an estimate below based on my experience in my local diamond district and what I've seen from IDJewelry and ERD type vendors who are great at providing a well priced, classic staple (ask for PS cut quality stones). You will need to decide if you want a spacer bar for future size changes (highly recommended). Good luck, lucky you!

For platinum and 20 pointers, a good price would be $5000 +/- $500
For platinum and 25 pointers, a good price would be $6000 +/-$500

ETA TBH, if you just want something nice and pretty, you don't have to go this big. I know someone is selling preloved eternity size 6 with 10 pointers for $1600 (just reduced). Check out the pre-loved section.

I got an amazing deal from IJD - about $4000 for a size 5 1/4 with 100% eye clean stones with all excellent cut diamonds (per Luann). I think I am going to go for it, but it almost seems too good to be true.....

It isn't too good to be true... They are amazing there!

Sounds like a great deal. IDJ is super easy to deal with so if you don't like it and it's not a "special order", you have 30 days to return.

I think a custom made ring to fit a person would not be returnable, would it?

It all depends on what you want. If you want the lowest price, go with non-ideal cut diamonds in lower color and clarity. If you want an heirloom piece, I'd go with ideal cut, around G-H color, and VS clarity in platinum. There is a huge variation in pricing depending on the quality. IDJ is known for low prices, but it won't be the same quality as you'd get somewhere such as WhiteFlash. But they both have their place and it is good to have choices!

This is an everyday ring to wear to work. I'm excited that so many on here love IJD. It is non-returnable because it is a custom order but Luann told me they would give me "pricescope quality" stones and replace any stones I am not happy with. I am going to get it :-)
