Hi all,

My husband bought me an amazing princess cut diamond (1.20ct, d, vs1) and I''m now trying to find the best way and price to set it.

My wedding band is a Tiffany knife edge platinum band (size 5) and as such, I''ve been educated to believe that it best that my "engagement" ring is also made with platinum. I am living in Bahrain at the moment and have found only one reputable jeweller who will create a platinum ring for me (apparently they both use the same workshop - the only workshop in the whole country who works with platinum). As such, I have no possibility to shop around for best price, or even find out if I am getting completely ripped off.

They have quoted me 400-450bd ($US1000-1,200) which seems extortionate. It is a plain solitaire ring (see attached image for design) with a knife edge band to match my wedding band. I initially wanted micropave diamonds in the prongs, but unfortunately they do not have the machinery to create micropave in platinum. The platinum they are using is 950 (though I haven''t yet asked what they are alloying it with).

What would be an approximate price for getting this ring made in the US, UK or Aus? And am I being completely ripped off?

Ideally I want to wear this beatiful diamond as soon as possible (seems such a waste to have it locked in the safe), but perhaps it is worth waiting until I go back home to Australia for Christmas...

Hi Miss Mandie,

I don''t think that is an unreasonable quote at all. I will post a picture of a ring I had made a little over a year ago, that is very simple also, and Plat. I paid 1400.00 for it. Plat is just plain expensive compared to WG. So I don''t think your quote is bad, considering.

Your ring is going to be really pretty!

That''s good news. Was that from a low/mid/high range jeweller?

Anyone else have quotes fro setting diamonds in platinum solitaire rings?

Sorry to threadjack, but Ellen your aqua is stunning in that setting!

I understand that platinum is more expensive than white gold. But considering there will only be a max of 4 grams of platinum total, (i.e. $180 worth - wholesale or say $400 retail) why on earth does it cost one thousand dollars extra on the 100% mark up!?

I think your quote sounds very reasonable- its more the time and labour on your custom ring involved. My custom solitaire ring, albeit slightly more weight but in 18k yellow gold came out more than your quote.
