I bought this today... my girlfriend thinks she is getting a little over 1ct but I got what I thought was a great deal. Its a certified 1.51 CT VS1 J. Ideal cut with vg everything else. I worked over a wholesale place that sells to the public for a couple weeks and got it for $4800. I think I got a good deal... but i''m allways skeptical. Whats everyone else think?

Next the setting.... I''m down to 4-5, she wants a micro pave with a halo, but not too much going on on the crown and band of the ring. I''ll post pics when its all together, hopefull within several weeks.

Thanks guys!

Well, who certified the diamond? And how do you know it''s ideal? Did you look up the ideal cut parameters or did the jeweler tell you that? Can you post all the specs here so people can tell you if it really is ideal cut?

That price is extremely low for an actual ideal cut J/VS1. Whiteflash has an AGS0 J/VS1 in their "A Cut Above" line and it''s listed at $9999. Other J/VS1s from other PS vendors start at $7546. You know the saying "If it seems too good to be true, it probably is"? Well that definitely goes for diamonds...I don''t want to be a Debbie Downer but it''s pretty doubtful you got an ideal cut 1.51 carat diamond for $4800.

plugging the numbers into the cut advisor, this diamond is just outside, nearly on the green Exellent line for GIA. I should also mention my girlfriend would rather go bigger then nicer for the most part.

I do have the EGL cert in hand, the diamond was has "DiaScript" with the cert # lasered on to the diamonds girdle. I do plan on having it appriased and inspected by someone else independently. The place does have a 30 return policy if I''m not happy, so I''ll get that done before the 30 days. I''m nervous about what you said though....

Sometimes EGL diamonds can be a good deal; get it appraised for peace of mind. PS has some good appraisers like Richard Sherwood and many others.

If it''s EGL, at that price we can bet the color is probably below J. No way for it to be what is represented as at that price.

That sounds like a fantastic price, and like something that should make her very, very happy ... but, just to be on the safe side, take it to be appraised ASAP. Even a single color/clarity grade can make a huge difference in price, so you want to be sure that the stone was fairly represented. Please let us know what happens, and post pics! I have a soft spot for carat and a half J''s ....

Thanks! yes I plan on getting it appraised ASAP. Thanks for your postive attitude. I understand everyone on here was just being honest which i like by the way, but i was starting to get really bummed there for a while.

Even if it turns out to be a grade less or so in color... I think my girl will be happy with it, and thats the most important thing.

I''m ok saving a little on a lesser diamond when she wants a more expensive setting... she likes the nice ones and demands platinum...

Pictures will def follow... Thanks again everyone!

UPDATE!

I had an appointment with at Atlas AGA today and had the diamond gone over by them. Long story short... what was expected. They thought the grades were off a little, Color by 2, and clarity by 1, but they still thought the diamond was an exellent value for the price. They said the cutter should pat himself on the back as the cut was amazing.

I took the AGA appraisal back to the seller and he said he would honor the sale and find a diamond to replace the first, and get it appraised by AGA first(they are right down the street) so we don't have this issue again.

While talking at AGA I started getting nervous the J color(a true J from their masters) would be too yellow in a micropave halo... They Diamond seller offered to go to an similar H for 1400 more. Worth it?

Thanks everyone!

Hey, awesome that your jeweler is willing to own up to his error! So it came out at, what ... L, VS2? It still sounds like a lovely (albeit warmer) stone. Now, moving on to your second question ... I suppose that kind of depends. You mentioned earlier that your lady prefers size, first and foremost, yes? Would the "similar" H be around the same size? If so, it really comes down to her secondary preferences ... I know that I, for one, actually much prefer the warmer stones: to my eyes, they just have more life. I had a choice between several color grades when I chose my J, and I just kept going for it unerringly. But given that taste is so subjective ... I might wager to say that unless you *know* for a fact that your GF''s of a similar mind, going for the H would be the safer bet.

One question, though: you didn''t feel nervous about "your" stone in a halo, which turned out to be an L, but the presumably lighter true J in the master set made you nervous? Why? Was it seeing it next to the other diamonds in the set, or ...? The smaller stones in a halo setting won''t really have quite the same level of contrast ....

Yes AGA had it at L VS2

After having AGA look at the stones I ended up going with the H 1.53 SI1 1B Tolkowsky cut. (a very nice SI1, with everything off to the sides according to AGA),

Total Depth 61.7%
Table Depth 58%
Crown Height 15%
Pavilion Dept 43%
Girdle Medium, Faceted
Culet None

Factor Grade
Light Return Very Good
Fire Excellent
Scintillation Very Good
Spread Very Good

Total Visual Performance 2.2 - Very Good - Worth buying if the price is right

It was $1300 more, but I liked it much better. When at Altas he showed me the master color set and it was very noticable with them all next to each other. Then putting a J into the Platinum micro pave setting I had picked out I was not impressed with the color verse the setting. They J suddenly looked much more yellow to me.

I think my girlfriend would be happy with the J, but it would have bugged me everytime I looked at it. A liittle piece of mind for myself.

The ring should be done Saturday... so I'm excited to see the two paired.

Can you tell me the name of the place you got your stone and where it is, I''d like to check it out?

Golden Nugget on the corner of 8th and Chestnut on Jewelers row. great diamond prices, as I learned my lesson ask them to get Atlas to look at it first.
