Hi all,

Can you tell me what your rule of thumb would be when negotiating a price for a preloved item? Is there a certain percentage of current retail you should shoot for and does it change if the item is branded (ie Tiffany, Cartier, etc...)?

Thanks!

Luxury brands would take more of a hit I would imagine. Retail for a 1ct solitaire from Tiffany being $13k I'd imagine they'd get actual market value for the stone plus maybe 10-20%. I think an offer of 10% off their asking price is fair but really it depends on how their pricing lines up with market value.

What about for sites like 1st dibs when there is a make me an offer? Do you have a set number yu start with or is it on a piece by piece basis?

Hi lily, I would figure out what I thought the individual piece was worth and how much I wanted it and then start from there. If something is well priced I would offer what they were asking but if I felt it was overpriced I would offer what I thought was fair. If their asking price was way off from what I thought was fair I might just move on and not offer anything because if we are too far apart I don't usually bother. However I have offered 20% less than what they were asking and had it accepted after a bit of negotiation close to my offer so you really cannot lose by taking a chance. Good luck and I hope you get the bling you want at a good price.

Thanks!

HI:

There are Estate vendors, who do not negotiate. Full stop. But you don't know who they are, until you ask. On First dibs, some vendors include the option "to make an offer" and that is a good place to start. If they don't like your offer, they will tell you or simply not reply.

Some have a standard 15% right off the top but again you don't know until you ask.

cheers--Sharon

10-20% I always try...... If it's a physical store (B&M) sometimes I''ll say I'm REALLY interested in a preloved piece etc and to just think about it and call me back at home, rather than put them on the spot. I always try to be fair & not ridiculous, based on my research, but I figure $$$ now vs. $$$$ at an unknown time in the future. sometimes wins the day.
