Precautions prior to getting a Custom Cut Diamond

I've been searching for an engagement ring for a little while now and think the best way to get the stone I want is to get it re-cut. I've been working with GOG and know based on many postings how well respected the vendor is. I am near the final stages of purchasing a stone and will directly send it off to get re-cut and then re-certified by AGS. I've already asked for and received the ASET, Sarin, and DiamXray on the original stone.

Regardless, I'm a bit hesitant since I won't physically see the original stone and am reaching out to the PS community to see what type of precautions I should take to ensure both GOG and I are fully pleased with the re-cut diamond? What is the typical protocol and requests a consumer should make during a re-cutting process? Any thoughts?

Many thanks!

If I understand your post correctly, the diamond to be re-cut is not being purchased through GOG - is this right? But GOG has had access to the Aset, Sarin, and DiamXray, and considers it a viable stone for re-cut? Since you've been working with them already, hasn't GOG provided you with their standard protocol for re-cuts? My basic concern would be, who bears the risk of loss if the stone is damaged during the re-cut, or if it comes out with dimensions significantly different than expected. I would think GOG's protocol would cover these issues.

If you do a PS search, you should find a couple of threads by other PSers who had GOG cut/re-cut a stone for them.

Are you recutting to AVC, AVR?

I am purchasing the stone through GOG and then having them re-cut. I'm pretty sure I bare any risk if the re-cut has any issues.

I'm not able to divulge the specific cut is at this point but will be happy to share once/if I decide to move forward. Sorry, I'm not providing as much clarity as possible.

Well, at the very least, if you are buying the stone from GOG and GOG is re-cutting it - will it fall under GOG's lifetime trade-in and buy-back policies? Will you have the option to not accept the stone once it is cut and receive a refund and/or to return it under GOG's 10-day or 30-day return policies?

Without knowing any details, hard to give specific advice. If you are cutting it to a GOG branded stone or new branded design, I am thinking they should bare the risk of any re-cutting damage and you are just paying for the finished product. If they are cutting it to a completely new design based on what you want (didn't think they do that) ... then I guess it make sense that you pay for the original stone.

The new stone will qualify for the lifetime buyback and tradeup. I'm not entirely sure who bears the burden if the stone is damaged. Also not sure about if I have the right to refuse the stone after receipt. That's something I will look into.

Ask Jonathan at Good Old Gold, I am sure if you have gone this far you already know he is easy to speak to. No need to wonder as he will give you the answer. Can't wait to see another custom cut stone if it goes ahead  Hope it will be another Octavia for the joy it gives some forum members here :naughty: ;)) ;))

Have you been given an estimate of what the re-cut stone will weigh? Do you have a target weight/dimensions in mind? What will happen if when cutting the stone, the cutter determines that he/she will have to cut it smaller than the prior estimate or target weight? Will the finished stone be sent off to be re-certified, and if so, who will pay for and insure that?

The stone will be sent away to be re-cut. The diamond cutter estimated that the new diamond would weigh 87% of the original weight. GOG wanted to level set expectations and stated it would be anywhere from 82%-87% of the original weight.

They new stone will be re-certified by AGS and I'll be funding. If we are able to come to an agreement, I will absolutely post all the details including pics on PS.

Thanks again for everyone's feedback
