Possibly a silly question...

And I know I could e-mail the vendors themselves to ask, but wanted to get some input here first. Do any of the PS vendors take outside diamonds as trade-ins, ever? I''m still only in the very early stages of thinking about this, but here''s the backstory:

My DH and I were very young when we got engaged (less than a year out of college). We got a beautiful ring, but the center stone has always bothered me just a tiny bit. Its a beautiful stone, well cut, but not an ideal H&A. It does have a GIA cert, however, and I''d imagine would do perfectly well in re-sale for someone looking for a very well cut stone, but not wanting to pay the premium for a super/branded ideal cut.

I know its kind of a silly mental thing, but I''d really love to be able to trade it in and get at least some of its value back to use towards a true ideal-cut H&A stone. I obviously wouldn''t expect to get all of what we spent on it back, but if we could get some of it, that would be really great.

Does anyone know if any of the PS vendors (GOG, WF, BGD, etc...) ever make deals like this??

If they do, am I being ridiculous for wanting to do this? Should I just figure out how to be happy with my lovely ring as-is, since DH and I would likely be able to afford a completely new upgrade in a few years'' time?

AG - I have had the exact same thoughts about my well-cut diamond as you are having. It is a beautiful stone, but not an ideal cut. I spoke to a local high-end jeweler, and they were more than willing to take my stone in on trade. But, my desire to have an ideal cut diamond was overcome by the math. They were willing to take my 1.5 ct F VS2 plus $10,000 for a Lazarre Kaplan 1.5 ct H SI1. I decided my $10k could be put to much better use, and besides, I love the F color. It would be worth asking, though. It might be worth it to you, or the answer might put your mind at ease, as it did for me. If you have a beautiful diamond, why not keep it and save up for another stone?

Fly Girl - thanks so much for the response. That is a crazy trade-in deal, I can see why you didn''t go for it

If that''s the kind of "deal" I can get by trading in my stone, I''d definitely not be interested. I was just hoping I could recoup >50% of the original cost of the diamond (hopefully more) by trading it into a PS vendor, since its a GIA-certified stone, and should be completely resaleable.

You may be right though - if the numbers won''t work out, I will probably just save up for another stone for when it comes time to upgrade a few years down the road...

Some PS vendors will offer you to sell it for you, but you won''t be able to use the money before it''s sold.
That''s what I think.

That would probably be fine. Do you know which PS vendors specifically offer this service?

I think Jonathan at GOG is doing that, just ask him to be sure.

Thanks - that is really good info!!

Hi Amber

www.pearlmansjewelers.com offer consignment and you could try Wink but not sure if he still does this - no harm in asking though.

Thanks Lorelei - I had forgotten that Pearlman''s does this as well. That''s really good to know!!

GOG Pearlman's JA
Some they will trade outright others they will only sell on consignment depending on the old diamonds stats, cut and time of year.
For all 3 it is a diamond by diamond call and the stone may need a new grading report.

Wink is not doing so last I heard as he does not deal and them and would have to wholesale them or recut and cant offer much because he would not get a good price on the other end of the deal.

Thanks so much Storm - that is really good info!! I may do some calling around and see what different places say. I''m not at all in a hurry on this, as its something I''ve only just started thinking about and I don''t want to rush into it...

Do you have any idea which times of year are better than others?

good time of year is now with Valentines coming up and some cash on the books from Christmas.
I would send an email next week with all the stats including the report # and request they call you.
That would probably work better than a phone call because you will have to talk to Jon, Jim or Bill not the sales people.
Some will be on vacation the first week or so of the year.

Karl - that makes a ton of sense. I have to put a little more thought into it, and talk to my husband about it as well, but I'm sure you are right about the time of year. I suppose if I miss it this year though, I could always try for this time next year...

If your seriously considering it contact them when your ready and see what they say regardless of the time off year.
If they cant do it then, hit them up again in August/Sept.
Just keep in mind that offers will be time limited usually 10 days.

Thanks Karl - I am seriously considering it, I''m just struggling with whether I want to make it an upgrade (size-wise) at the same time. Ideally I''d like to have some money saved up specifically for this, and be able to take that, plus whatever I can get for my 1.12 ct G SI1 and use it towards an ideal-cut 1.5-1.75 ct I-J color ideal cut stone (ultimately I''d like to have a 2.3-2.5 ct, but expect that that will have to wait a few years). I have a pretty good sense of what the 1.5-1.75 stone would cost, so I guess maybe I need to e-mail those guys to get at least a very rough estimate of what I could get for my current stone, so I can set a target figure for my diamond account...
