Hi everyone,

I thought I''d ask first before getting my hopes up. My ering stone is a princess cut, 0.57 carats, VS1, H color. i like it ok, but i''m getting it re-set into a different setting, and DH asked if I''d like to upgrade to a bigger stone.

I''m not sure how I can figure out what mine is worth, and what it''d cost to upgrade. I mean, obviously I''ll talk to the jeweler, but I wanted to get some idea before then. I''m thinking of going to something around 0.8--1 carat. I wear a size 4.25 ring, so no need for antyhing super large.

also, which cuts are cheapest? priciest? i''m open to any cut at this point.

i''d really appreciate any thoughts/advice!

When I did a search on a stone with your specs, the prices I got were 1839 for GIA excellents, through 1922 for AGS ideals. If your stone was graded by a lab other than those two, it''s worth less. But unless the store where you bought that stone from has a lifetime trade up policy giving you the full value, there''s no way you''d get anywhere close to that from any jeweler.

As far as cheaper cuts, I''d say marquises. Not sure how much you''d like it going from a square though.
How much are you willing to spend for your upgrade?

THanks so much! I think I''d def. take a look at marquise and other cuts--I''d try them on before making that decision.
I don''t know how much we are looking to spend, honestly. He just brought it up just to check it out. I''m sure it isn''t a whole lot. Its just the princess stone that I have now is set in a dual-band ring, but I want to put it in a normal solitaire or similar setting, and am worried that it''ll look pathetic even on my tiny fingers. So i''m thinking I need either a larger stone or a shape that''ll make it appear larger...

It also depends on what your current stone is graded regarding cut, and if you have a trade up policy. I traded in my princess cut 0.71 G I1 towards my new stone, I got $600 for it. It was not where I originally bought it from, but at least they were willing to give me something for it. I now have a stone I can trade in and only have to spend $1 more if I want to trade up again. If you are actually looking to get anything close to what you spent, maybe try selling it on e-bay. Or you may consider just setting it in a pendant. My very first stone was a 0.33 princess cut, and I wish I would have kept it since it is the stone DH proposed with, I would have set it in a bezel pendant or something, just because of the sentimental value, but alas it went towards the trade up to a 0.71 stone

. Which was pre-PS days and I regret that

Let us know what you find. You may want to try on the different shapes to see which you like first, then decide on a pricepoint and size.

RB are going to face up larger than some of the fancy cuts, so if you are looking for finger coverage...

Welcome!

Unfortunately, it is usual to only get back around 50% or less of what you paid for a diamond when reselling, so an option you may have, is to ask about trading it in against another diamond, once you find one you like. Does this diamond have a GIA report, or any grading report?

See this thread for info on what to expect when reselling or trading in. https://www.pricescope.com/community/threads/reselling-gems-jewelry-what-can-you-expect.17952/

It seems that some fancy shapes may be cheaper than rounds but it depends. Shapes which are said to look the largest for their weight are marquise, pears and ovals, so if you like any of those then that might be a consideration. Thin bands on the actual ring can also help the diamond to pop. Cut is crucial to get a pretty diamond, so time spent here researching and asking questions will serve you well!

Hope this helps.

thanks again.
unfortunately the stone is EGL certified, which I know isn''t working in my favor here.

Maybe I can just get a halo setting for it.
another big issue is that my wedding band is a rose gold half eternity band, so any setting i get will need to be rose gold or rose/white gold. that makes things even harder.
i wish i had done more research when we got engaged!!!

Hi Pinkcloud,

Unfortunately, I am a newbie here and I can''t offer you any information regarding the resale value of your current e-ring. I am in the process of upgrading my e-ring as well, so I know how you feel. I wish I had found PS at the time we were shopping for my original ring.

My only suggestion is that you should consider keeping your original e-ring. I find the resale value is usually too low, when you deal with a vendor other than the one you made the purchase with. Just my 50 cents.

Best of luck with your upgrade.

I''d keep the old one too and make it into a necklace or something. You will be glad you have it
