My partner and I have been shopping for engagement rings for a couple of months now and I feel like I finally know enough about diamond quality to pick something good for the money we''re spending. We fell in love with a Scott Kay setting (the cross-over basket setting, without the horizontal bar), but were told by the local store that they will not set outside-purchased stones in Scott Kay settings.

Will anyone do this? I''d prefer to buy a great quality stone online and have it set in THAT setting, not a knock-off. (We''ve looked at many many many copies of that style - similar to the Tiffany Lucida - and prefer the original.)

On a side note, this store will custom-design... i.e. knock-off any designer styles but their work on a tacori clone wasn''t very good. Is it usual for the salesperson to do a hard-sell on the custom work instead of looking up the price of the designer one?

It sounds like you may have to check around with other retail stores that carry the same design from Scott Kay. It seems to me that someone would be able to assist you though. It''s very normal for customers to purchase the loose diamond from an online vendor and then take the diamond to a jeweler that is providing the mounting. Not that the online vendor can''t provide ring settings of there own, but some customers have already selected a ring design with another company that the online vendor cannot provide. It usually helps if you give the jeweler the carat weight, shape, and measurements of the diamond. This way you''ll know ahead of time if the diamond that you are considering for purchase will even work with the ring design that the jeweler is providing. I''m sure you''ll find somebody that can help. You may just need to call and shop around. Good luck....

Thanks. I have called the one other shop in Alberta that carries Scott Kay. His designs aren''t widely stocked up here, I guess.

Hi,

This might appear strange, but i have a Scott Kay Setting I purchased from a Jewelry store
for 5000 or 6000.00 years ago. It''s still in perfect condition, it holds a 1 carat stone.
round diamond.

If your interested in it, I can sell it to you. I was going to put it in a consignment store
this weekend.

I can also send you a picture too.

I just recently upgraded my center stone to 1.50, that is why im selling it, no other reasons.

Just let me know if you want to see it. It''s the one with channel set diamonds around the center,
and the band has the same channel set diamonds across it. It does have the bars, and it''s all
platinum.

Oh thanks Carolyn -

The biggest stone we can afford is a 3/4 ct right now, so I don''t think this will work. But good luck!

Just FYI - absolutely you can buy a scott kay and have your stone set.

Scott Kay has a lot of vendors - it should be no problem to find one in your area - where are you?

Also - if you do buy out of your area (ie the internet) you should be able to find someone to set it for you locally. If a local jeweler won''t do it - some appriasers will do it for a fee.

I was interested in a scott kay - with custom changes. I found them very easy to work with and willing to customize their setting... which actually surprised me.

Ended up with a tacori..

I''m in Calgary, Alberta. The Scott Kay site lists three stores (all the same store, different location), plus a fourth nearby in Edmonton. I called the Edmonton store but never heard back - not a good sign!

I have a request going out to a vendor in Vancouver, but Scott Kay''s site isn''t that great for showing the side views on the ring. As far as I can tell, M1052PP is the setting I''m looking for, but the side view isn''t that clear.

I am in the same boat. I have had very little luck with the stores here in Calgary. I absolutely love the M0722RD10PP ring that he has on the website. Jewellery by Maximes had one in stock but they said they wouldn''t order the band in without using a diamond from them (wonder were the markup is?). I did find a very good replica of this ring at spence diamonds so that may be an option. I sent a message to scott kay to see if there was another way to buy direct but I haven''t got a reply yet. If I find a way I will post it here.

It is against forum rules for vendors to advertise

Jessicaloss,
I am at a loss for your disregard of the forum rules and policies.

Hi Indigirl,

I have a Scott Kay ring that I put my stone I already had in it. There was no issue in doing this. I think the store just wants you to buy your stone from them. I have been happy with my ring and just awaiting to upgrade the center stone. You should ask before you buy the ring what is the smallest and largest diamond it can hold.

Good luck,

Lori
