Possible to have shared-prong setting with filigree?

Hi everyone,

I''ve been learning a lot here, and would appreciate your input...I''m looking for anniversary ring settings (5 or 7-stones with 1ct centre) with shared prongs to give a really ''scalloped'' look to the band. However, I would like to have filigree/scrollwork detail on the side view - and the shared-prong settings I''ve seen are all ''solid'' on the side view. Is this for security? I can''t find any settings that have the best of both worlds

I hope you don't mind if I bump this up to expand my question...I've done some searches on shared-prong settings, but haven't quite found what I'm looking for. If anyone could tell me the following it would be great:

1. In a band of diamonds (say 5 or 7 stones), when the shared prongs are very close to the centres of the stones (giving a very scalloped look), is this less secure than other styles of prongs? If yes, to what degree?

2. Does it matter if there is scrollwork or filigree on the side of the setting, below the diamonds?

3. What are the benefits of combining metals in a setting - ie, yellow gold or platinum band with white gold prongs? Which is the strongest for prongs?

4. Finally, does the shared-prong style work best (or only) when all the stones are the same size? For example, if I had a 1ct centre with .30 sides and then two more .07's (or so) on either side, could they share prongs?

I look forward to learning more from all the experts here!

No expert here... just my 0.2

This would leave more of the stones' girdle open to take up impact... To waht degree this is worse - not sure how this would be measured! Some would not want tension settings with the girdle left out like this and older rings with such style found in estate auctions and shops show chips...

Not necesarily. And the scrolls can also be set on white metal background. Tacori has a bunch of such designs.



3. What are the benefits of combining metals in a setting - ie, yellow gold or platinum band with white gold prongs? Which is the strongest for prongs?

Platinum is usually advised for prongs, but there are gold alloys meant to take the hit... no problem.



4. For example, if I had a 1ct centre with .30 sides and then two more .07's (or so) on either side, could they share prongs?

Not likely. I have yet to see this... but I would imagine such 'shared prongs' would become quite large (and unusually shaped) to pull the trick.
