Hello,

Is it possible for a stone to be certified by both AGS and GIA?

Here's what happened: I picked out a stone that was from GIA (the store even gave me a little laminated GIA tag that lists all the characteristics of the stone) but when the salesperson requests for the original paperwork (certificate) to be sent to the store, she found out that it's not a GIA stone, but an AGS one. The store ran a Sarin report, and the report comes out to be very similar to what's listed on the GIA tag that I'm keeping as well as the copy of the AGS certificate the store currently has. I have no idea what's going and the saleslady told me she's contacting the dealer to find out where this stone actually comes from. Anyone ever ran into something like this or has any idea what may be happening?

It is common for dealers to send a stone to many labs and use the report that makes the stone worth the most money. In the Grading review we conducted (see lower left on home page) none of the 16 diamonds got the same grade from all 3 labs. so i guess that is what might have happened????

Neither lab is certifying anything. They are providing their opinion of some of the attributes of the stone being examined.

The labs are happy to provide as many of these opinions as they get paid to provide and it makes no difference if someone else has seen the stone before.

AGS will even do a cut-grade-only report if you have a GIA report but also want documentation that cut is AGS0. (Am not positive this is still the case with the new report format, maybe one of the dealers can comment.) At the same time they will inscribe the GIA number on the girdle, but request a high resolution copy of the GIA report so that this doesn''t result in misrepresentation. I think someone here had a comment about this practice a few weeks ago

We also will inscribe a another lab''s report number onto a stone fopr clients, but we won''t do it unless the ORIGINAL report is physically in our hands. We check to see it is the correct diamond before doing any engraving.

You''d be surprised how many diamonds have had more than one major lab inspect them.
