Dan Rather, from his Facebook page:

"In my mind there is no bigger story right now than the insistance by president Donald Trump that there were millions of illegal votes cast in the last election - and that’s saying something considering all that’s going on. The reason why this is such a bombshell is not because there is an any basis in truth for the story. It's precisely the opposite. These are lies of a magnitude and scale that they not only are crashing into a wall of facts and reason, but of sanity.

I have no training in psychology and I am very wary of anyone's armchair diagnosis of the President. But let's stop and consider what he's implying. Our election system is in shambles. And that not only calls into question his election, but every down ballot race. This would be a conspiracy of epic proportions. This is "we faked the moon landing" kind of stuff. Of course what this really is is pure and unadulterated horse manure. And everyone in Washington knows it. That's what's so troubling. There are real issues around voting in our country but they mostly center on questions of fairness, access and intimidation. By all means let's investigate that.

As for the notions of VOTER FRAUD (Mr. Trump's all caps) from what discredited blog or which unscrupulous advisor is the President getting this craziness? Or is he just making it up? Does he really believe it? Is it just the height of cynicism and distraction? None of these options are in the least bit comforting. But most Republicans in Congress seem just fine silently nodding along as long as they get their “conservative” (reactionary, in the view of opponents) agenda enacted. On policy, they have every right. They won their elections and that merits respect, no matter how grudging. But the tone and content of the falsehoods and sheer propaganda originating from the White House is another matter - and that is not to be respected.

Is there a political price to pay for this descent into the Twilight Zone? Because in the real world, we are all being affected.
As I have said many times before, I believe the overwhelming majority of Trump voters are decent-intending people who love our country as much as I do. But with such things as the lie about “voter fraud”, I don’t think the press should ask any of President Trump’s supporters--especially those in Congress--a question on any other topic - before they can answer, what the hell is going on...and do they approve of it?"

But people didn't vote for HRC because LIAR. Mm hmm, ok. This is working out really well so far.

Thanks for posting this Monnie. I tried to do a Trumpet today but the news is so revolting and depressing that I just couldn't do it. Several sources have reported that one of his nominees S. Mnuchin and his chief strategist S. Bannon are registered voters in two states. Isn't that ironic....

The insanity of this week has been like trying to take a drink from a firehose. Every morning I brace for what I'll read.

But to the topic of the "3-5 million illegals voting" nonsense, this article from the NYT just came out. I'll italicize the important parts since I'm sure most won't click.

https://mobile.nytimes.com/2017/01/25/us/politics/trump-bernhard-langer-voting-fraud.html

The three witnesses recall the story this way: Mr. Langer, a 59-year-old native of Bavaria, Germany — a winner of the Masters twice and of more than 100 events on major professional golf tours around the world — was standing in line at a polling place near his home in Florida on Election Day, the president explained, when an official informed Mr. Langer he would not be able to vote.

Ahead of and behind Mr. Langer were voters who did not look as if they should be allowed to vote, Mr. Trump said, according to the staff members — but they were nonetheless permitted to cast provisional ballots. The president threw out the names of Latin American countries that the voters might have come from.

Mr. Langer, whom he described as a supporter, left feeling frustrated, according to a version of events later contradicted by a White House official.

The anecdote, the aides said, was greeted with silence, and Mr. Trump was prodded to change the subject by Reince Priebus, the White House chief of staff, and Senator John Cornyn, Republican of Texas.

I'll post the list of b.s. he's already done in a few. For now...

I passed a church marquee yesterday which read: "We don't see by sight, we see by faith." And I went, yup, that's how this shit happens.

To finish that quote - from the same article:

Just one problem: Mr. Langer, who lives in Boca Raton, Fla., is a German citizen with permanent residence status in the United States who is, by law, barred from voting, according to Mr. Langer’s daughter Christina.

“He is a citizen of Germany,” she said, when reached on her father’s cellphone. “He is not a friend of President Trump’s, and I don’t know why he would talk about him.”

That's the basis of the prez's assertion?

If I hear "I have faith he will succeed and so should any decent American" one more time I will lose it. How many times should a wolf tell a sheep they are about to be eaten?

And today: the wall and a Muslim ban.

Copied and pasted without source. This was posted by a Facebook friend and from what I can tell this is a compilation of actual facts (not alternative ones) based on having read about many of these topics already from reputable sources. A little easier than clicking that many links, anyway.

Oh, I'm getting there next, bunnycat, don't you worry.

 pretty much most of what I see in my FB feeds centers around the more drama oriented topIcs though mr bcat and I discussed this scientific suppression in great detail yesterday for several hours.

To be fair, it seems to have happened in several administrations (though supposedly on policy and not on actual scientific information itself) but it is still disturbing.

Excerpt:
Here’s the list of Trump’s executive actions so far, starting with the most recent.

12. Border wall. In this order, President Trump states it is the policy of the United States to immediately construct a wall on the southern border. The order directs agencies to begin planning and identify funding for the project, including sending requests to Congress. It also directs agencies to construct or contract out for more detention facilities at or near the Mexican border. This order also directs the hiring of an additional 5,000 border patrol agents, subject to funding. And it requires that all agencies identify any U.S. aid funds that have gone to Mexico in the past five years. (We are still awaiting an online link and will post when it appears.)

11. Deportations and sanctuary cities. This is also a longer order with several major pieces (as above, no public link yet). The president has directed agencies to step up deportation of those in the country illegally. First, he prioritizes seven groups of people for deportation. It is anyone: convicted of a crime, charged with a crime, who has committed a chargeable offense, has misrepresented themselves to the government, has abused a welfare program, who is under deportation order and who may “in the judgment of an immigration officer, otherwise pose a risk to public safety or national security.” Second, the order also directs the hiring of 10,000 more Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents, though it states that is subject to funding. Third, it states the U.S. policy is now to allow local law enforcement officers to act as immigration officers whenever possible. Fourth, it orders the Attorney General and Secretary of Homeland Security to block federal grants from so-called “sanctuary” cities which do not enforce some immigration laws.

10. Review manufacturing regulations. In this memorandum, the president ordered the Commerce Secretary to begin a 60-day review of regulations for American manufacturers, with the aim of finding ways to speed up permitting and all federal processes for them.

9. American steel in pipelines. President Trump directed the Commerce Secretary to come up with a plan to ensure that all pipelines built or repaired in the United States be constructed with American-made materials “to the maximum extent possible.”

8. Speeding up environmental reviews for all priority infrastructure. President Trump ordered that agencies and the chairman of the White House Council on Environmental Quality work together to set up faster deadlines and environmental approval for “high priority” infrastructure projects. It gives significant power and responsibility to the White House Council on Environmental Quality chairman, who will decide within 30 days if a proposed project is “high priority.” (The president has not yet nominated a new CEQ chairman.)

6 + 7. Speeding approval of Dakota Access and Keystone Oil Pipelines. President Trump ordered that permits for the the Dakota Access Pipeline be approved in an expedited manner, “including easements or rights-of-way to cross Federal areas.” (Army denial of an easement was a previous victory for pipeline opponents.) In his Keystone memorandum, Mr. Trump invited TransCanada to resubmit its application for a pipeline permit, and he directed the State Department to issue a final decision on that application within 60 days.

5. Federal hiring freeze. The president has told agencies they cannot fill any vacant positions nor open new ones, with two exceptions: military personnel and critical public safety positions.

4. TPP. This memorandum withdraws the United States from all Trans-Pacific Partnership negotiations and from signing the trade deal.

3. Abortion. President Trump has ordered that federal dollars cannot go to organizations that provide abortion services.

2. Regulation freeze. The president has frozen all regulations now in process (but not approved) until they are approved by him or an agency after he took office. This means any regulation signed by former President Barack Obama in his final weeks in office — including some that deal with energy efficiency standards — are on hold until they’re reviewed by Trump’s administration.

1. ACA rollback. Mr. Trump has allowed all agency heads to waive requirements of the Affordable Care Act to the “maximum extent permitted by law.”

Thank you, VR! I thought that was mentioned in the bit I provided, but yes, it's important. An example of the system actually doing its job was, apparently, the basis.

I'm sure it's been mentioned (this thread's moving quickly!) but it's pretty obviously a set-up for additional voter suppression tactics. Isn't it interesting that their focus will be on bigger states, like California and New York?

http://www.politico.com/story/2017/01/trump-voter-fraud-investigation-democrats-react-234161
Excerpt:
“The thing that I worry about with this argument about voter fraud is it gives the Republicans and others another tool and another reason to justify to the public of denying people the right to vote,” Rep. Elijah Cummings, ranking Democrat on the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, said on MSNBC. Assistant House Minority Leader Jim Clyburn (D-S.C.) and Rep. Bob Brady (D-Pa.), top Democrat on House Administration Committee, also signed the letter.

“The president can join me and my staff, and we will show him that there is no voter fraud,” Cummings continued. “The thing I do want him to do, I want him to investigate, are all of the people who don't get the chance to vote, who have been denied the right to vote.”

The claim has been debunked by numerous independent fact-checkers. Some Republicans, including House Speaker Paul Ryan and Sen. Lindsey Graham, agreed this week that there is no evidence to support it.

In general, voter fraud in American elections is rare, and widespread voter fraud is virtually nonexistent. While one 2012 Pew Research study found that some voter registration records were out of date because people had died or moved, the study’s author, David Becker, has said that there is “zero” evidence that voter fraud resulted from them.

Still, in recent years, generally Republican-led state legislatures have cited fears of voter fraud to make a case for enacting new regulations around voting, like voter ID laws. Civil rights groups charge that those restrictions are discriminatory because they disproportionately affect minorities and young people who lack government-issued photo identification and also tend to vote for Democrats.

(rootling around in the liquor cabinet) We've got Balvenie, Aberlour, Oban, Dalwhinie, Highland Park 12, no Laphroaig sorry.

For the non-scotch-ies, we have a couple of versions of Jameson's Irish whisky, bourbon, several vodkas, and a bit of tequila.

Oh, and the bottle of champagne that we didn't get to open on NY's Eve. (long story) Seems a waste of good bubbly though. Nothing is going to liven up this day, is it?

I'm dying inside. I cannot believe Trump is trying to put gag orders on the park service and hold on funding. I agree with Bunnycat that part of me thinks the idiocy about voter fraud is to take eyes away from his insane "executive orders" (e.g. his facist tendencies). I'm disgusted and furious.

Now hold on. I'm not saying all C's voted for Trump at all. I'm trying to make the point that when we teach people to have blind faith in things or people or whatevers, we sometimes run into issues such as the current sh*tstorm. I am sorry my illustration is offensive, but it is offensive to me that religions tend to control the way MANY NOT ALL think in all aspects of their lives. I can say exactly the same thing about political propaganda--in this country we are taught from a very young age that we are to pledge allegiance to this country and not question that allegiance. Just saying 'tis not working out so well for us, that's all. Finally, I am equally offended by every religion, not just Christianity. And Holly, I can assure you I do not equate anyone here with the WB crowd. Not even close. They're a special kind of crazy!

I usually drink red wine. Not tonight. Tonight is a vodka night.

Monnie and Ksinger, If you two find the winning drink that makes all this seem more bearable, please share!!! PLEASE!!!

I hate to tell you this, Callie, but it's probably a Jonestown Kool-Aid/Drano cocktail.

(rootling around in the liquor cabinet) We've got Balvenie, Aberlour, Oban, Dalwhinie, Highland Park 12, no Laphroaig sorry.

You're probably right. The next 4 years are going to be a never ending nightmare. There is supposed to be a pro life rally in DC this weekend. I can already hear the alternative facts Trump and Kellyanne will be spouting regarding crowd size.
