I''m looking at a round brilliant that rated a 1 on the HCA cut advisor, but the GIA report has it listed as :
Cut grade- good
Polish- good
Symmetry- good

What affect does the polich and symmetry have on the actual appearance of the diamond? Also, shouldn''t it be rated a higher cut if it performed so well on the cut advisor?

Thanks for any insight!

Can you post the cut information please?

As far as polish/symmetry goes, a stone can be well cut and have only good polish/symmetry. Light performance can still be nice if the stone has nice proportions, but I think symmetry and polish issues start to be noticeable to the naked eye when the symmetry/polish drop down to good or lower.

It is said by some experts that polish and symmetry ranked good and above will look the same to the naked untrained eye. However excellent to ideal is part of the usual fine craftmanship finish of a superideal cut diamond. Regarding the HCA, it works on more of a pass or fail basis, with anything under 2 being a pass and considered a possibility. The diamonds then have to be considered on their own individual merits from there with a study of the proportions, Idealscope image, ASET if desired and lastly, own eyeballs!

Here are the stats on the stone, and its 1.68 ct
Depth % 59.2

Table % 57

Crown Angle % 34

Pavilion Angle % 40.2

Culet* % pointed

Do you have any pictures or images as well? It could be fine...but with a shallow depth and polish/symmetry in the good range it really needs to be seen. Bottom line is that there are probably more cherry picked stones out there, but this one might not be a dud.
