Back in Dec. I put a few jewelry items on CL that I wasn''t wearing. Everyone who replied was insane asking for super low deals.

Question is since I''m budgeting other stuff, I would like to try selling again so I have a bit of extra cash to extend my funds and I am wondering what percentage of market value should I be asking?

The earrings would be much lower in price online but I would guess some wouldn''t compare online prices to mall b&Ms. One set of similar earrings are platinum (like mine are) and retail at Helzberg for $999 (I did pay less online). Is it reasonable to expect to get $300 for them or am I just wasting my time. I wouldn''t sell them for less!

Thanks.

Can''t hurt to post them. Sometimes you can have good luck on ebay, but you still pay seller fees. I''ve never dealt with CL.

We''ve recently sold a lot of things on CL. I''ll share what we asked for and the retail prices, perhaps that will help.
- An only used twice Krups coffee/espresso machine. Retail: $100, Our price: $40
- Two brand new (in the boxes) 7" digital photo frames. Retail: $80 and $70, Our price: $30 and $30

We sold a lot of other small things, but those are the bigger ones.

I have tried to sell my old engagement ring on CL but no luck. It appraised for $1400 and I posted it for $350, still nothing.

You might have better luck posting higher priced items on ebay, MC. I have zero luck with CL when I post anything over $100, not kidding. CL is great for things you just have sitting around, maybe they were gifted to you and you aren''t looking to recover any funds. It''s not good if you''re trying to get the best offer for an item you want a fair amount for.

I just sold a bracelet I''ve had since college on CL for less than $50. It was a gift from an old boyfriend and I hadn''t worn it in years. I honestly just priced it to sell and didn''t think twice when the gal didn''t even try to make me a lower offer! I was thinking, whew, I''m just glad it''s gone, that''s cash I didn''t have that was just sitting there taking up space.

CL is hit or miss. I was able to sell a used iron, but not a desk in good condition on CL, so you never know.

Is the jewelry you''re selling expensive/quality stuff (ie. not plastic, throw-away, fun stuff)? If so, I''d be careful. There''s a lot of stories about people selling expensive stuff on CL and being robbed when it came time to meet the buyer.

Haven - okay, sounds like 50% for basics. How long did you keep your eng. ring up on CL?
Monarch - Years back I sold a pair of huggy earrings on eBay and they retailed for $350 and they sold for $70. Still okay, but the dang fees between them and Pay Pal left me with so little, I probably should have kept the earrings! lol
Kitcha - yep, about the robbings. In the listing I said I''d only meet at a mall jewery store who would verify the earrings for the buyer. I was hoping that would detour thiefs.

my other option would be to reset them like Bella''s new lever backs from WF. Soooo pretty! lol

The most expensive item we sold on CL was a hot tub! Now that I look back, we must have been crazy because we sold it for $5,000 and accepted a cashiers'' check.

Quick update - Wow, people are off their rockers! One person (a woman possibly - her email name was a ladies name) spent DAYS corresponding with me. When we had set a date, she cancelled it the morning of and then tried to get me to meet her at various times at night. When I finally said I won''t meet at night, she quit emailing me.

Another guy kept showing interest by emailing too and then just abruptly stopped. He sent me eight emails!

People do not make any sense to me. I don''t want to give away what I have. Guess I''ll keep everything! (I was going to use the money to add to my pendant upgrade fund, sooooo, looks like I''ll just have to go with a smaller diamond instead!)

I''ve bought and sold stuff on CL.
It''s free.

I even sold a car.

Just ignore the dumb emails.

I''ve sold a couple of jewellery pieces on CL. I had to post them a few times, but of the 4 pieces, 2 sold for only slightly less than I was asking.

Yeah, sometimes it just take a few days of emails before the people make it obvious that they''re not serious! I''ve learned to state that if the ad is still up, then the item is still available. That limits the amounts of "is this item still for sale?" and when I say yes, they don''t reply again. lol

I also increased the price to more than I want so people can present an offer of closer to what I''m hoping to get. . .I will leave up the current ad just in case one person isn''t unstable and can actually follow through.

MC there is an item I''m selling that, brand new is $160. It was barely used (like mere seconds of it''s life) and not returned. It''s pretty much 99.999999% new. I posted it for $80... and people are coming back at me with $40!!!!!! I explained to them that there is no way I''m selling it for that low, and one guy said, "Ok, I can afford $50." Which means, he can not afford what I''m selling- and I keep telling them that.

"The price is $80 CASH, Firm. If the item is still listed, I still have it."

I''m all for getting good deals, but you can never find these items for close to 50% off, so why would I sell it 75% off? Puh-lease. I''d rather hang on to it for a few months (I''m certain it''ll sell the warmer it gets).

Stay persistant! :D

Oh, sometimes I also ask for more because nearly EVERY single person feels that a good deal isn''t good enough and wants to haggle me down, so that helps too like you said.

CL is unbelievably full of flakes. My husband uses it frequently to buy & sell music equipment and the stories are endless with people offering completely low-ball offers and offering total crap for trades. He gets ridiculous emails with offers for trades, people spouting off about how much they think something worth and what he should take for an item, repeat offers, etc. etc. you name it.

Just stand your ground, don''t tolerate even a singe email if the person is rude or can''t be bothered to write a full sentence! Just keep re posting, its just a matter of right time right place for your ad.

With ebay you deal with a lot less crap on a less personal level with a fee - depends on what you prefer!

Get this: Here is a direct quote from one guy, "economy is bad, trying to make a soon to be wife happy." So that was his excuse for offering me 2/3 of asking.

What in the world is he doing buying diamond earrings if the economic crisis is hitting him so hard?

With eBay I am just paranoid of sending jewelry through the mail. I know people do it often, but I''ve had items lost before and have had to refund money. Also PP has screwed me over a few times.
