When you go to the quality cut search on Pricescope, a lot of them have pointed culets. Is this bad? What are the disadvantages of pointed culets? Also, are most J colored diamonds the same color if they do not have a blue tint? I saw one this week on my friend''s wife and I could not tell the difference. It looked colorless to me. Can you only tell the difference if you have them side by side? Thanks!

Pointed culet and no culet are basically the same thing. A pointed, small or medium culet are fine. A large culet is undesirable as it can allow light to leak from the bottom of the diamond.

J is considered a near-colorless grade. Depending on the lab that graded it, many Js have only small hints of color. Round Js that are well-cut may face up whiter than similarly graded Js of average cut due to optimized light return (rounds are graded from the side). There are many threads in the SMTR folder about round Js appearing colorless due to fine make.

If you have a well-cut J then it will be essentially colorless to your random naked eye if you look at a ring. If you inspect the ring up close and turn it from side to side and eyeball it, you may be able to see a tiny hint of warmth on it. But the better the cut, the better to mask slight color. I have a J SI2 and adore it. When I tell people who understand diamonds it''s a J, they are amazed and never can tell.

re the culet, a pointed culet is as desirable as no culet...just different terminology. you''d want to shy away from a modern round cut that had something like a large or medium culet and maybe even a small. some find v.small perfectly acceptable.
