Hi ladies,

After doing a lot of searching for the past few months I think that I am ready to reset my engagement ring. My ring is too large and the style doesn''t allow it to be resized. The ring was actually damaged by the original jeweler who made it when they told us it COULD be resized and ended up altering its shape. The ring would need a new 1/2 shank to be fixed and since it never really complemented my wedding band very well I decided to reset it altogether since it needs to be redone. I''m using the three stones from my ring to change to a 5 stone ring. I''m going to be visiting a few jewelers in my area to show them the designs I have in mind. I''m wondering from all of you what I can expect as far as the platinum and baguettes from my old ring are concerned. Will jewelers give you any money for such materials as a credit toward a new design? Do you have any other advice on what I should look for in a jeweler or questions to ask about a resetting. I had such a bad experience with the jeweler we purchased my original ring from that I''m a little nervous this second time around and don''t want to make the same mistake twice. Thanks for all your advice!

It really depends on the jeweler whether they will buy your small stones or not. As for what to look for, I always ask to see a number of pieces they have created, including something similar to what I want. I also look for a non-pushy sales tactic, and knowledge about various techniques, stone shapes, etc. Basically I just talk them up and put my BS detector on before I walk in the door.

I never go to a jewelry store without my loupe (magnifying eye piece). Buy one for yourself and start looking through it. You''ll see the workmanship and what constitutes quality pieces.
