I am looking for feedback on this stone:

Color: H
Clarity Si1
0.85 carat
RB: 6.25 – 6.21 x 3.62 mm
Depth: 58.1%
Table: 66%
Crown: 10.9
Pavilion: 44.1
Girdle: thin to thick polish
Cutlet: none
Polish: Very Good
Symmetry: good

It has and EGL USA certificate from EGL Miami. I paid $3,000 for the stone. I took it to a local jeweler to compare it to some GIA stones and this stone looked just as clear and white as other H GIA’s . my question to all you is did I get a good price or is it worth a few bucks more to get a 90 pointer with potential a better cut. i did compare my 85 pointer to some mid 90 pointers and you could not tell a size difference.

Thanks and I look forward to your input

Ok you compared the stone to other GIA stones, so you are aware of the differences between the two labs I assume. Unless you have a tremendous amount of diamond buying experience and knowledge then I could never recommend that you buy an EGL stone. Jewelry store lighting is set up to make an ice cube shine, you can't tell anything about the stone under these lighting conditions. It's why we constantly recommend that people view their diamonds in a variety of lighting environments before purchasing. Outside in direct sunlight, for instance, in an office environment, a cloudy day, under a tree, under incandescent lighting etc etc.

Next, EGL is notoriously for being several color and clarity grades off, that's why they appear to be a deal next to comparably graded GIA stones. Your stone is just as likely to be a K I1, I'd bet it's most definitely NOT an H SI1 by GIA comparisons. Diamonds sell for what they are worth, there are no deals. EGL doesn't like you better than GIA and therefore giving you a better price. GIA is actually doing you the favor by accurately grading their stones.

OK on to the cut of your diamond. It's a horrible cut, I'm sorry that sounds very harsh. It's been cut to look quite large for it's weight. We recommend a max table size of 60 with an ideal of 54-58. The stone is shallow and has a flat crown, all of these are going to impact how well the stone reflects light, in this case, not very well. I would encourage you to continue looking for a diamond. If you'd like to share your budget with us we can help you locate a gorgeous stone that will completely blow this one away. Otherwise I would recommend that you only shop for GIA EX or AGS 0 stones, they truly do represent the best value for your hard earned money. Drop down in color and clarity if you need to to achieve the size that you want. We can help you do that too. A well cut K is going to look whiter and brighter than a poorly cut G-H, it's also going to be much more beautiful. Let us help you find something! =)

Is the stone returnable?

Edit...here is how your stone scores on the HCA tool

Light return..good
Fire...fair
Scintillation..poor
Spread...excellent

Score of 5.4...we usually only recommend stones that score under 2. Please return this
stone if you can. We can find you something better for your money.

I'm sorry, I just reread and saw that you already purchased this stone. I'm assuming that you have a return policy since you are considering trading for another stone. Yes, return it and look for a better cut, but this time stick with GIA or AGS and come here with the information first and let us help guide you. Have you considered purchasing online? Prices are much more competitive because they don't have the same overhead that local BMs do.

i have sent back stone and canceled check. I thought it seemed off. i am looking to spend $4,000 max in setting. Please help find me something beautiful

What type of setting are you planning on? If we say $1k for setting and $3k on stone? I'll take a look and get back to you. I'm on my kindle and its really hard to do diamond searches but I'm sure someone else will jump in and help too.

You can request up to 3 aset images from James Allen. That would be the next step after you find a stone you like and put
it on hold so it doesnt get poached.

if eye-clean this is a really nice one...AGS000...all these stones need to be checked by the gemologist to see if they are eye-clean

http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/G-SI1-Excellent-Cut-Round-Diamond-1512454.asp looks like a nice stone but couldnt get
the cert to come up.

I'll stop for now. If you can narrow down what you want (color/clarity/size) we can probably help narrow it down more.

I'll help too. I know how hard it is to search on a kindle.

I am very glad you returned it, the proportions of that stone were very poor, it really was not well cut at all, issues of loose grading aside.

If you buy online from a reputable company, and you buy a GIA Ex cut grade or an AGS0 cut grade, you will be guaranteed a better cut that that one you originally picked.

Yep! Its impossible for me to search the JA sight on my kindle because no stones come up! So frustrating when
you want to help someone...I finally kick my kids off the desktop!

This one has a nice spread for it's weight, with PS discount $3340

This one needs to be evaluated for eye cleanliness, it's doesn't look as though it will be, but these photos are made to light up the inclusions so it's possible....

nice spread..
http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/I-SI1-Excellent-Cut-Round-Diamond-1490769.asp $3140.

this one will face up a bit smaller than the others but it HA
http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/I-SI1-Ideal-Cut-Round-Diamond-1458708.asp $3025

If you want to maximize the size of the stone, I would suggest a halo like this...
http://www.jamesallen.com/engagement-rings/pave/-18k-White-Gold-Pave-Set-Diamond-Engagement-Ring-17155w14.html $650.
http://www.jamesallen.com/engagement-rings/pave/14k-white-gold-pave-halo-diamond-engagement-ring-17305w14.html $850

I'll keep looking too.
