I received my gorgeous cushion from Mark T on Monday and I love it. In Pricescope terms, it''s only tiny but it''s perfect - cushion brilliant, ex,ex, .62, F, SI1.

I need to decide on the setting quickly - our engagement party is the 8th April. The jeweller I''ve been working with has found issues with the designs I''ve shown him. I really love Slammie and Orange''s rings - narrow shared prong band with a basket high enough to allow a shared prong eternity either side of the e-ring. My jewellers issues have been -

1) I need to have 8 prongs/split prongs for stone security

2) It''ll be hard to find a basket that can be safely attached to a band no wider than 2mm that''s still high enough to ensure the prongs don''t rub on the shared prong bands

3) To get a good effect, the diamonds/shank must taper toward the middle - get larger, not smaller

I''m confused, most of the bands seem to not taper in SMTR - but maybe it''s just an optical illusion? There are heaps of designs on here but he seems to think none of them will be safe enough. I definitely want it to be safe but I also want to keep the look I''m going for. Can anyone advise me on the type of basket I should go for? I''m not keen on cathedral settings. Also, should it taper? Do I need 8 prongs? Help!!!!!

1) 8split prongs is just like having a four prong (one in each corner) but split. that is not unreasonable.
2) this is entirely possible. 2mm is ultra ultra thin. you can usually get a peg head on there, but a high basket...that is structurally difficult.
3) i don''t know what effect you are going for. could you post a picture?

Hi Belle,
Thanks for the reply. It was late when I posted last night, I should have said prong set eternity, not shared prong. All I want is for the diamonds to look close together and for there to be very little metal showing. I tried on an eternity band that they make and it tapers upwards toward the middle, with about 3 pointers on the sides and 5 pointer in the middle (which obviously wouldn''t be there if it was set with my cushion).

I really like these rings, hope they don''t mind me posting them -

Sorry to bump my own post but I have to see the jeweller in a few hours. Can anyone give me some advice on the tapering of the band? And of the type of basket that would be secure on a narrow band? And if I need 8 prongs...
Thanks
Ruby

He''s right. With 2mm the basket is going to be quite precarious if you''re aiming for height. Most of the rings you see have wider than 2mm bands.

And no, you don''t need 8 prongs for security unless you''re getting such thin, brittle prongs that they''d break easily.
