I''m choosing my engagement ring and I come across the following at a local store in Hong Kong.

Cut: Round
Carat: 1.82 Carat
Clarity: VS1
Color: F
Table: 59%
Depth: 61%
Cutlet: none
Girdle: Medium to thick
Cut: Very Good
Symmetry: Very Good
Florescence: Very Strong Blue
Price: US$15380 (about 15% off Rapoport price)

Everything looks good to me except the Very Strong Blue florescence. I understand blue florescence is good in lower color diamonds like j, k, l, but since this is an F color, does that decrease the value of the stone? However, the diamond itself looks VERY white, even more so than a D color stone.

Can experts here give me some comments on the stone? Is it overpriced for the blue florescence? Thanks.

Hi Jen,

In first place, WELCOME!

Personally, I wouldn't buy a stone with v.strong fluorescence. It is going to look milky when observed in bright sun light. I can assure you that that isn't pleasant to the eye. Those diamonds look 'foggy' and 'dead'. Yours may be the exception, though. I'd ask you to see it in sun light so that you can get an idea about its look.
Second, the cut may be very good or not. You have to ask for additional cut details, as crown and pavilion angles and percentages. Also, make sure that the girdle isn't almos all thick, otherwise you may be paying for a few points that you cannot see. As for the price, tell me, are diamonds generally expensive in Singapore? Considering the very strong blue fluorescence, I'd pay between ~$14K and 15K.

Dear Giangi,

Thank you very much for your prompt reply. And thanks for your advice as well. I just looked at the diamond at the store and haven't seen it under sunlight. I sure will do that next time I visit the store to reconsider the diamond. Actually I reside in Hong Kong, not Singapore. Prices of diamonds shouldn't be any expensive than in the US. So you think the price she quoted me was too high? She sounded like she was giving me a great deal : ) I guess it's always good to shop around more and decide later. Thanks again. That's very helpful.

Oh sorry Jennifer... I thought you were in Singapore. My bad.
No, it isn't overly expensive, but I think you could get a much better deal, especially on the net. Many sites offer exceptionally cut diamonds at prices that are waaay below B&M's offers.
I just had a look on some sites (btw, all these vendors are members of this forum!) and found some very nice stones, all priced in your budget, so you can get an idea of what you could get if you shop hard.

Hi,Jenma.

I am in HK too and I recently bought a 1.39ct H&A 19% off Rap, it's a CGL Japan cert with pictures of the H&A. If you don't mind telling me the store you visited I can give you some opinion.
