Hello,

I took my beloved to B&M stores yesterday to look for engagement / wedding ring sets.

She liked the Kay Jeweler''s set (I think they might have called it a wrap with a solitaire) with 3 side round diamonds on each side in a triangle shape (total six at about .12 carats each) and about a 1.0 carat center solitaire; and its yellow gold.

She has a 7 ring size.

She does not want too big of a diamond but my budget is pretty much unlimited. She also does not want the diamond to sit up too high. She is relatively conservative and not into the bling factor but I want her to the very best, but with still staying smart and practical.

What would you recommend and from where? And can I get the whole ring set plus the diamonds set all from the same place?

thanks,
Rick

Welcome!

As to what constitutes the best is a matter of opinion and depends on the individual, but cut is KEY for a gorgeous diamond, so that has to take a high priority. I would suggest maybe looking at something like Whiteflash A Cut Above in around a carat or so, and for good colour and clarity as it seems you have a good budget and want high specs in these, perhaps an F or G colour and VS clarity are a good choice, however there are those who insist on nothing less than a D IF or VVS clarity as that is the best to them, it purely is a matter of preference. You can indeed get the whole ring set and made from WF or any vendor, either using one of their settings or custom to get exactly what you want. You can tell the vendor you don't want the diamond set up too high when you are discussing the setting, this won't be a problem for most settings.

This is a nice example of an ACA and superbly cut as all this brand are- http://www.whiteflash.com/hearts_arrows/A-Cut-Above-H-A-cut-diamond-329894.htm

Lovely G VS2 here - http://www.whiteflash.com/hearts_arrows/A-Cut-Above-H-A-cut-diamond-273554.htm

Also vendors such as Wink Jones, Good old Gold and James Allen listed under resources have an excellent rep here and you can see what they have to offer and use their expertise. There are others too there.

Also read the tutorial above to learn about cut and the other components of diamonds, then you can see what matters to you personally. You can drop the colour and clarity to perhaps an H or even an I if you wish and consider an SI clarity as many of these are eyeclean, then once you have got the basics, you can make an informed purchase. I hope this helps.

I would second Lorelei's recommendation of something from Whiteflash, Good Old Gold, and James Allen. You can also check out Engagement Rings Direct. I also second her thoughts on what to look for. CUT CUT CUT!

Kays is not a great place for service OR quality and their diamonds are usually pretty bad. They usually look like frozen spit with some black marks in them compared to nice diamonds OR you will pay way way way too much for some semi-decent stones.
