I have been feverishly searching for diamonds for the past 2 months and the more I learn the harder it becomes. Here is my delima. I have purchased a diamond for 2750. The specs are

70% Table
72.5% Depth
1.04 length to width ratio

It is an F VS2 .72 carat. The polish is very good and the symmetry is good. My delima is in the girdle. The girdle is extremely thin to very thick. I am worried based on researching this site, that could be a problem? This is my only concern with the stone. Am I to paranoid about the girdle or will that be okay. Any help would be so greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Also, one last related thing. All retailers try to refrain me from buying a stone online. If I can find the exact same measurements with a better girdle, it should be ok to buy online through blue nile right? They say that you need to "see" the stone. But if you can''t "see" the difference when you are buying a VS1 or VS2 clarity, why would you need to see the stone for an inclusion?

You have to see it to see if you like it, not about the inclusions.

It says extremely thin to very thick per GIA? Or is it an AGS stone from BN? It depends on how much of the girdle is extremely thin and how much is very thick, but I wouldn't buy this stone. Unless you can find out exactly where it is so thin, I'd return it.

What does that mean, you have to see it to see if you like it, not about inclusions. If I am purchasing the diamond based on very strict criteria, then there will be no difference in the diamonds. I am sorta a perfectionist. That is why I want each part of the diamond to fall in an "ideal" category. Since diamonds are not rare, I figure search til you find it? Those diamonds you suggested were very good, but clarity was poor. I am one of those who needs a clarity that satisfies my "mind." If I am spending 2700 on a diamond, why not get E or F VS1 with great depth and table sizes? At some point, when you have your diamond narrowed down to a specific setting, why do you need to see it to believe it so to speak?

Ok, think about this: have you seen the difference between 2, 3, and 4 chevron princess? Which do you like better?

What exactly? I missed that? What is chevron princess??

See pavilion view of princess at very bottom of page: http://diamonds.pricescope.com/agsideal.asp That's a 2 chevron diagram.

In addition, there are several different crown faceting configurations... many different looks are beautiful! But you might have a preference for one look over another.

Regarding seeing the diamond it isn''t so much about the inclusions but in fancy shapes the cut. Very subtle differences in depth, table, girdle thickness and cutting angles etc can make a big difference to the performance of the diamond, how it handles light, leaks light, fire, brilliance, faceting patterns etc. So diamonds may look similar on paper, but might look quite different to the eyes. Above all, it is your own eyes which will tell you what is beautiful and this is where the magic, charm and individuality of a well cut diamond comes into it''s own.

Mako, would you post the length and width of your stone? I might suggest something, but I don''t want it to be smaller than the one you have now.

5.05 X 4.87 X 3.53

Thank you Loreli (spelling sorry) for your imput. So it seems you can have a variation of different looks with this cut but all different looks could potentially be ideal, it''s personal preference in this case? Right?

Exactly! What is beautiful and the 'best' cut to one person might not be to another's taste. For example, some pear shapes have a sort of crushed ice effect as do some Radiants - if you take two of the same shape and similar proportions which are said to be Ideal cut they might look quite different, although what is Ideal in a fancy cut can be subject to various opinions. I prefer a more clear and faceted look if that makes sense. Princess cuts can react very differently according to very subtle variances in cutting as said previously and because two look similar on paper, doesn't mean they will look similar in comparison even though the measurements of both are said to be " Ideal" depending on opinion. So really it is a case of knowing what specs you want, going through your options and seeing which one " speaks" to you out of them. Also a vendor ( I don't know about Blue Nile) can provide you with pictures and Idealscope images which can make the choice easier.
