There is a large surge in the number of people needing food right now and the longer it lasts the worse it is going to get.
Parents have more meals to prepare with kids home and many of them are getting their hours cut or losing their job.
With bare shelves the stores are going to be giving less.
My wifey4vr volunteers at a pantry and the phones are ringing off the hook while they struggle to keep the food flowing and everyone safe.
Your local pantry really needs your help!

Thank you for the reminder. I will call Sacred Heart Community Services (our area) and make a financial donation so they can purchase food.

Thank you!
While many people are stocking up "just in case" that could be the only things a low income family can afford. While many people have full pantries "just in case", there are people going hungry because they can't find supplies and can't afford to hoard.

They had a large donation of TP, so they could hand out some to their regulars with some left over for emergency clients.
The sad thing i that one of them went to put it in their trunk and laid down their purse, phone and bags in the trunk and left it open while getting her kids in the car and someone ran up and grabbed the bag of TP and ran off.
Left the phone and her purse, just took the TP.
Sad thing is that if he had asked they would have given him some.

HI:

Thank you for the reminder!!! I usually donate weekly with my shopping, but admit to forgetting this week. I'll do better!

cheers--Sharon

As expected the giving from the grocery stores was down 50%, more than that on staples and the demand was up 25%+.
They really need any help they can get.

Stormy, not sure where W4E is volunteering but I was going to call the Rockford Rescue Mission and donate, unless you suggest a different place since I know you're more in tune with this community having lived here a long time.

The biggest thing you can do other than donate is DO NOT HOARD food and supplies. If you know someone who is maybe you can convince them that they are part of the problem. There would be no shortages otherwise.
I was out today picking up an order for the supplemental food program we run in coordination with the school district and several stores looked like the parking lot were less full than normal where every day last week it looked like the Tuesday before Thanksgiving. Hopefully that is a good sign that people are following the shelter in place order and staying out of the stores so they can replenish and catch up.

I was trying to buy packs of microwaveable rice for the food bank, and was told there was a limit of only 2 packs of any rice per transaction at the supermarket that is a collection point for the local food bank.

I do not have an issue with this. However, the limit is not widely known by the staff, let alone the shoppers, and I had 6 packs of microwaveable rice and a pack of uncooked rice in my trolley, and none of them were for me as I have tons of dry foods already in the house without the need to replenish for a very long time!

When I tried to explained they were for friends as well as the food bank, same limit still applied. So I gave up and only bought 4 - two for a friend with no rice whatsoever in the house and 2 for the food bank.

Not happy to be made to feel bad when I was trying to help!

And I wish they had started to ration goods at the onset of the panic.

In addition, there does not appear to be any logic to their limits - one person observed to have 4 uncooked chicken and that went through in one transaction without any intervention!!!

Rant over.

I talked to my wifey4vr and she said the Rockford Rescue Mission is a great place to donate and needs help.
You can donate online: http://rockfordrescuemission.org/

Thank you for the link Stormy, and please also thank W4E for confirming!

With the rising cost of food and a huge increase in shipping costs as well as a large caseload your local pantry and food banks could use help.

I routinely help our local food pantry...I love a good bargain and I tend to stock up so I watch my dates and when the get 4-6 months from expiration or there is none, I donate!
